MBK: Trojans' second-half surge defeat Mustangs 65-55

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University men's basketball hosted Morningside College for their second meeting of the season at the DSU Fieldhouse Tuesday night. After a slow start, DSU rallied and held on for a 65-55 non-conference victory over the Mustangs.
The Trojans won their second straight game and lifted their overall record to 9-12. Morningside dropped to 10-14.
DSU missed their first eight shots of the game to allow the Mustangs to grab a 6-0 lead. The Trojans made their first field goal with 14:10 left in the first half. Morningside continued to expand their lead to 15-4 with 12:18 left before intermission.
The Trojans would close the first half with a 24-12 run to overtake a 28-27 halftime lead. It was DSU's first lead of the game.
DSU started the second half with a 14-3 scoring tear to take a 42-30 lead. Morningside started the second half going 1-for-8 from the field compared to the Trojans' 7-for-13. DSU made their largest lead two times at 45-30 and 47-32.
Morningside used an 18-9 run to cut the deficit to 54-48 with 2:53 left in the game, but could not get closer as DSU secured the victory.
The Trojans forced the Mustangs 15 turnovers in the second half.
Nine Trojans scored in the game. Everett Smith scored 21 points. He went 6-for-12 from the field and went 9-for-10 at the free-throw line. Smith had eight rebounds and four assists. Santino Clay scored 14 points off the bench. Bryce Snyder added 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. He had four blocked shots. Spencer Adams had nine points and three steals.
Mitch Carstens had 20 points for Morningside. Eddie Marrs scored 14 points and stole the ball five times. Adam Palmer had eight rebounds.
The Trojans shot 44 percent from the field (22-for-50 compared to the Mustangs' 36.2 percent (21-for-58). DSU was 18-for-28 (64.3 percent) at the free-throw line compared to Morningside 10-for-13 (76.9 percent).
Dakota State's bench outscored Morningside 27-13.
Morningside stole the ball 14 times compared to the Trojans' seven.
DSU won the rebounding battle 39-31.
The Trojans will return to DAC conference action this weekend in North Dakota. Dakota State will travel to Dickinson State on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. (CT)/7:30 p.m. (MT). On Saturday, the Trojans will face No. 23 Minot State at 6 p.m.
