WBK: Trojans lose two games in North Dakota

The Dakota State University women's basketball could not bounce back in the winning column Friday and Saturday nights.  The Trojans suffered an overtime loss at Dickinson State and a loss to Minot State.  Dakota State dropped to 8-13 overall record and 3-7 in the DAC conference.

The Trojans were outscored 14-5 in overtime to the Blue Hawks Friday night at the Scott Gymnasium in Dickinson, N.D.  The Blue Hawks ended their four-game losing streak.

Dickinson State opened the game with an 18-8 run.  The Trojans used a 23-5 closing run to grab a 10-point lead at halftime, 33-23.

The Blue Hawks outscored the Trojans 36-26 in the second half.  The score was tied at 59 at the end of the regulation.

The Trojans shot 28.6 percent in second half and overtime compared to the Blue Hawks' 42.4 percent.

DSU's Katie Bourk shot 6-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the 3-point line, for 17 points.  Alyssa Kirk added 16 points and shot 4-for-8 from the 3-point line.  Donna Lavea recorded a double-double with 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Ellesse Washington dished four assists.  Angela Green had seven rebounds.

Kia Herbel had 17 points and gathered 13 rebounds for Dickinson State.  Amber Adams added 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Kelsey Boedeker had five assists.

Dickinson State went 17-for-25 at the free-throw line, all in the second half and overtime, compared to the Trojans' 8-for-12.

Dakota State was 10-for-18 from the 3-point line compared to Dickinson State's 10-for-24.

The Blue Hawks outrebounded the Trojans 43-33.  Dickinson State suffered 22 turnovers compared to the Trojans' 13.

#13 Minot State 79, Dakota State 60

The Trojans missed their first 11 shots of the game to allow Minot State grab an 11-0 opening lead at the MSU Dome on Saturday evening.

The Beavers held the Trojans to 17.6 percent shooting (6-for-34) in the first half for a 40-16 halftime advantage.  Minot State shot 17-for-30 from the field (56.7 percent).

Dakota State outscored Minot State, No. 13 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Division II poll, in the second half 44-39.

Lashonda Martin led the Trojans with 17 points off the bench.  She shot 5-for-12 from the 3-point line.  Bourk had 12 points, all scored from 3-pointers.  Reserve Allegra Kohley added 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Green scored eight points and gathered eight rebounds.  Yui Onodera dished out five assists.

MacKenzie Mack had 20 points and four steals for Minot State.  She went perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.  Kallie Erickson added 19 points.  She shot 5-for-9 from the 3-point line.  Ari Hendrix had nine points and 10 assists.  Caroline Folven scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Trojans won the rebounding battle 40-37.  DSU outscored the Beavers 38-16 in bench points.

Dakota State went 11-for-40 from the 3-point line compared to Minot State's 8-for-26.

The Trojans return home on the weekend of Feb. 12-13.  DSU will host Black Hills State on Friday night, Feb. 12th as part of the Elite One Sanford game sponsor night and "Hawaiian Night."  Tip-off is slated at 5:30 p.m.  On Saturday, Feb. 13th, the Trojans will welcome South Dakota School of Mines as part of DSU Faculty/Staff recognition night at 4 p.m.  All games will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse.
