Women's Basketball: Trojans fell short to No. 6 Black Hills State 85-75

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team returned home Friday night at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans hosted Black Hills State in a DAC Conference action. The Yellow Jackets raced to a 45-31 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Trojans 85-75.
The Trojans suffered their third straight loss and dropped to 8-15 overall and 3-8 in the DAC Conference. Black Hills State, No. 6 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Division II poll, won their ninth straight game and raised their overall record to 20-5 and 9-2 in the DAC conference.
With the score tied at 5 with 17:46 left in the first half, the Yellow Jackets went on a 20-7 run to grab a 25-12 lead with 11:42 left. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Trojans 8-0 in second chance points in the first half. The Trojans went 0-for-4 from the free-throw line compared to the Yellow Jackets' 12-for-13.
Black Hills State expanded to their largest lead of the game at 60-35 with 13:04 left in the game. DSU cut the deficit to nine points at four occasions, including three minutes to go, but could not get any closer.
Donna Lavea scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Trojans. She shot 8-for-11 from the field and recorded two blocked shots. Ellesse Washington added 14 points on her 6-for-8 shooting night. She had six rebounds. Lashonda Martin scored 10 points off the bench. Yui Onodera had nine points and four assists. Katie Bourk dished out six assists.
Katelynn Lamb had 19 points for the Yellow Jackets. She went perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Keely Krolikowski scored 16 points. Jenna Bolstad and Alana Dykhouse each had 11 points. Janna Schriber scored eight points and dished out six assists. Tiffany Thomas had six assists.
The Yellow Jackets were 25-for-30 at the free-throw line compared to the Trojans' 8-for-13.
The Trojans shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) compared to the Yellow Jackets' 46.4 percent (26-for-56).
BHSU outrebounded the Trojans 38-29. The Yellow Jackets scored 16 second-chance points compared to the Trojans' four.
DSU scored 38 points in the paint, while Black Hills State had 20.
Dakota State will attempt to bounce back in the winning column Saturday afternoon. The Trojans will host South Dakota School of Mines as part of Dakota State Faculty/Staff recognition night. Tip-off is slated at 4 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
