MBK: DSU ends regular season with losses to Vikings and Jimmies
The Dakota State University men's basketball team ended their regular season with two losses in North Dakota. The Trojans suffered a heartbreaking loss to Valley City State on Friday night. DSU could not get a win over Jamestown Saturday night. As a result, the Trojans will be the seventh seed for the DAC Postseason tournament, starting on Wednesday.
Dakota State concluded their regular season at 11-17 overall and 4-10 in the DAC.
Valley City State game
At the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City, N.D., Dakota State led 58-57 with less than ten seconds to go. The Vikings made a layup with less than two seconds remaining to put them up 59-58. DSU's half-court shot fell short at the buzzer.
Reserve Spencer Adams scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Trojans. Everett Smith added 13 points and dished our three assists. Santino Clay had nine points. Bryce Snyder added eight points and grabbed seven rebounds. Brad Martin stole the ball four times.
Chris Fuqua, Tyler Macomber and Dareon Spencer each scored 11 points for Valley City State. Fuqua had nine rebounds and four assists. Macomber recorded eight rebounds. Orlando Anderson added nine points. Mark Klingenberg went perfect from the field (4-for-4) for eight points.
The Vikings led at halftime by one point, 29-28. Both teams scored 30 points in the second half.
The statistics were evenly matched in the game. The Vikings had one more field goal than the Trojans (22-21). DSU had one more free-throw than the Vikings (12-11). Both teams had four 3-pointers.
Dakota State outrebounded the Vikings 36-27.
VCSU shot 48.9 percent from the field compared to the Trojans' 37.5 percent.
Jamestown game
The Trojans could not get a win over their final regular season game at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. DSu suffered a 62-51 loss to Jamestown.
Jamestown outscored the Trojans 30-22 in the first half. The Jimmies shot 50 percent (11-for-22), including 4-for-6 from the 3-point line. DSU went 9-for-26 (34.6 percent) from the field.
Adams scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench for the Trojans. He shot 8-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-4 from the 3-point line. Smith added 13 points and dished three assists.
Reserve C.J. Peeters scored 19 points for Jamestown. He went 5-for-8 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Hans Hoeg added 15 points and dished out four assists. Jacob Kelsey had 13 points and six rebounds.
Jamestown shot 48.8 percent from the field (20-for-41) compared to the Trojans' 35.3 percent (18-for-51). The Jimmies went 13-for-15 at the free-throw line while the Trojans went 8-for-15.
The Trojans were outrebounded by the Jimmies 33-23.
Dakota State will travel to Valley City State, No. 2 seed for the DAC men's basketball postseason tournament, on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated at 7:30 p.m. in Valley City, N.D.
