MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Dakota State University baseball team opened their 2010 campaign by participating in the two-day Metrodome Classic.  The Trojans faced Kansas Wesleyan, member of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).  The Coyotes took game one 3-1.  Dakota State rallied for game two win, 8-1, to earn a split with the Coyotes.

The Trojans are currently 1-1 overall.  Kansas Wesleyan is 2-3 overall record.

DSU's Chance Hargrove opened the fourth inning with a double down the right field line.  Hargrove advanced to third on a wild pitch by KWU's Casey Barnes.  Derek Grundmann hit a sacrifice bunt RBI to score Hargrove to give Trojans' 1-0 lead after three scoreless innings.

Coyote Aaron Converse was hit by pitch in the bottom fifth inning.  He advanced to third base by Kensley Dukes' sacrifice bunt.  Converse scored by a passed ball by DSU's Jose Figueroa in the bottom fifth inning to tie the game at 1.

Kansas Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom sixth inning to break up a 1-1 tie.  Kyle Lynch hit a RBI single to score courtesy runner Cory Shorette.  Then, JaMari James hit a RBI triple to deep center to score Lynch.

The Trojans were not able to convert their scoring opportunities in the final inning.

Figueroa went 2-for-3 for the Trojans.  Hargrove had a double and a run scored.  Chad Hunt and Zane Roduner each added a single.  Hunt recorded two stolen bases.

Matt Royal and Ronny Romo each had a double for Kansas Wesleyan.  Kurri Darby added a single.  Shorette had two stolen bases.

Bob OlsonJerod Burleson started for the Trojans.  He pitched five innings.  Burleson allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out five batters.  Nick Bird took the loss for DSU.  He went one inning in relief.  Bird allowed two unearned runs on three hits.

Barnes pitched a complete game for the Coyotes.  He gave up one run on five hits.  Barnes struck out seven batters.

Both teams had five hits in the game.  The Trojans had two errors.

Game Two

Jared DonahueFor the second straight game, Dakota State scored the first run of the game.  The Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Max Garza opened the inning with a walk.  Figueroa hit a double down the left field line to advance Garza to third.  Brian White hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score Garza.  Bob Olson added another RBI single to score Figueroa.

Dakota State extended to 6-0 lead in the third inning.  The Trojans opened with three straight hits - a double by Josh Tiede, a single by Hargrove and Grundmann. Figueroa added a two-RBI single to score Hargrove and courtesy runner Donald Strand.

The Trojans added two more runs in the fifth inning to make it 8-0.  Pinch hitter Garrett Gassman hit a RBI single and White added a RBI sacrifice fly.

James recorded a RBI double in the sixth inning to break the Coyotes' scoring drought.  Aaron Heiland scored the lone run for KWU.

Figueroa went perfect behind the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double for Dakota State.  Tiede went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.  Grundmann had two singles.  Olson added a single.

Romo and James each had a single for the Coyotes.

The Trojans outhit the Coyotes 9-3 in the game.

Jared Donahue tossed 5 2/3 strong innings to record his first victory for the Trojans.  He struck out 11 batters.  He gave up one run on two hits.  Samuel Lopez came in relief and pitched 1 1/3 innings.  He gave up one hit.  Lopez struck out two times.

Ryan Leasure suffered the loss for Kansas Wesleyan.  He pitched two innings.  Leasure gave up four runs on four hits.  The relievers (Kirk Fridrich, Kyle Boulet and Hunter Ward) combined for four innings and gave up four runs on five hits.

Dakota State will play Dordt Thursday at the Metrodome.  The first game of the doubleheader is slated at 5 p.m.
