MINNEAPOLIS - The Dakota State University baseball team played the second day of the Metrodome Classic at the H.H.H. Metrodome on Thursday against Dordt.
The Trojans fell short in the first game of the doubleheader 3-2, but won the second game 5-2 to earn a split with the Defenders.
DSU finished their four-game stint at the Metrodome with a 2-2 overall record. Dordt's overall record is 1-1.
Game One
The game featured a pitcher's duel between DSU's Lincoln Gassman and Dordt's Patrick Sinnema.
Dordt scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Josh Bowers and Ben Fife hit back-to-back doubles with one out. Courtesy runner Morgan Halpert scored on a Trojan's error with two outs.
The Trojans were held hitless until the top of the sixth inning, when Chad Hunt had a bunt single to record the team's first hit of the game.
Tony Asta hit a double in the bottom sixth inning for the Defenders. The Defenders added a run by Bower's RBI single to score Asta to make it 3-0 lead.
Dakota State began their rally in the final inning of the game. Chance Hargrove opened the inning by reaching the first by a Dordt error, then pinch hitter Derek Grundmann hit a single with one out. Bob Olson added a RBI single to end the Trojans' scoring drought to make it 3-1. A wild pitch by DC's Eric Torgenson scored Grundmann to cut the deficit to 3-2. Asta came in to pitch for Dordt and recorded the final two outs as the Trojans' rally fell short.
Hunt, Grundmann, Jose Figueroa and Olson each hit a single for the Trojans. Hargrove and Grundmann each scored a run.
Both Bowers and Fife went 2-for-3 with a RBI, a double and a single. Nathan Fraley added a single an Asta had a double.
Gassman took the loss for Dakota State and pitched six impressive innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits and struck out eight batters.
Sinnema recorded the win for Dordt. He went 6 1/3 strong innings. Sinnema gave up two earned runs on three hits and recorded five strikeouts. Asta recorded the save for the Defenders.
The Defenders committed three errors in the game compared to the Trojans' two. Both teams left four runners on base.
Game Two
The Trojans opened the game with a 3-0 lead and held on to defeat Dordt 5-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Hunt opened the bottom first inning with a single. Max Garza followed with a single to advance Hunt to second. Figueroa was hit by pitch and was replaced by courtesy runner Donald Strand. Grundmann hit a 3-RBI triple to deep right-center to score Hunt, Garza and Strand.
Garza's RBI single scored Zane Roduner and helped the Trojans to extend their lead to 4-0.
Travis Feeke recorded a triple in the top fourth inning for the Defenders. Bowers hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score Feeke to make it 4-1 Trojans.
The Defenders added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Torgenson got on base with a single and was replaced by a pinch runner Robbie Garcia. Fraley made a RBI double to score Garcia for Dordt to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Grundmann got on base due to a Dordt error in the bottom of the fifth inning for DSU. Josh Tiede recorded a double to set up a scoring opportunity. Roduner hit a RBI single to score Grundmann to put the Trojans' lead to 5-2.
DSU held on for the win as the Defenders did not convert their scoring opportunities in the final innings.
Hunt went 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored. He recorded a stolen base. Garza added two singles, one RBI and a run scored. Tiede had a double. Roduner and Figueroa each had one single.
Torgenson went perfect behind the plate going 2-for-2. Feekes went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Fraley had a double and one RBI. Kyle Davis added a single.
Seth Erdmann recorded the victory for the Trojans. He tossed four innings. He gave up one run on one hit. Samuel Lopez came in for relief for 2 1/3 innings. He gave up one run on five hits. Olson recorded the save for DSU. He closed the game in 2/3 innings. Olson allowed no hits and no runs.
Bryan Diemer suffered the loss for Dordt and pitched three innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits. Jake Slings came in for 1 2/3 innings and recorded one unearned run on two hits. Jensen Callaway closed the game in 1 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits.
Dakota State had eight runners left on base. Dordt had three runners left on base.
The Trojans will take part in the annual RussMatt Invitational spring break trip in Phoenix, starting next weekend. On March 6th, DSU will face No. 22 Malone (Ohio) in the first game at 11 a.m. (CT)/10 a.m. (MT). The Trojans will play Peru State in the second game at 4 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (MT). The games will be held at the Gene Autry Field.
