Trojan Baseball goes 3-6 in Arizona spring break trip

Ryan SteffensenThe Dakota State University baseball team completed their annual spring break trip last week.  The Trojans competed in the annual RussMatt Invitational held in Arizona on the Gene Autry and Snedigar fields.

DSU completed their spring break trip schedule with three wins and six losses.  The Trojans' overall record now stands at 5-8.

The Trojans notched wins over Peru State twice (4-1 and 8-4).  DSU scored seven runs in the ninth inning to break up a 6-6 tie with NCAA Division II Northern State for a 13-6 victory.

Garrett GassmanDakota State suffered losses to No. 22 Malone (OH) three times, Peru State, Trinity International (IL) and Northern State.

Overall in Arizona, Donald Strand batted .833 (5-for-6) at the plate and added six runs.  Ryan Steffensen went 8-for-20 (.400) and swiped two bases.  Chad Hunt batted 11-for-29 with a double and four RBIs.  He recorded three stolen bases.  Garrett Gassman recorded a solo home run and recorded six RBIs.  Chance Hargrove, Brian White, Josh Tiede and Bob Olson each recorded a triple.

DSU Baseball Team in ArizonaIn pitching, Samuel Lopez recorded 1.29 ERA in four game appearances.  He gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits and limited the opponents' batting average at .241.  Nick Bird pitched a total of 6 2/3 innings and held the opponents' batting average to .080.  Lincoln Gassman went 10 1/3 innings and struck out 16 batters overall.  Jared Donahue started two games and struck out 12 batters.  Nick Mutz pitched four games and recorded a win and a loss.  He struck out 14 batters overall.

Dakota State will return back to action this weekend.  The Trojans will face two teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  DSU will travel to Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D. for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  On Sunday, the Trojans take on Briar Cliff in a doubleheader in Sioux City, Iowa at 1 p.m.
