Trojan Baseball splits with Chargers

The Trojans won the first game 7-3 and fell short in the second game 6-4.

Dakota State's overall record stands at 6-9. Briar Cliff is 3-17 overall.

Game One

The Trojans opened the first inning with four runs. Briar Cliff cut the deficit to 4-2 after the fifth inning. DSU added three runs in the sixth inning to make it 7-2. The Chargers scored once in the bottom sixth inning as the Trojans held on for the victory.

Jose Figueroa went 1-for-1 behind the plate with a double, run scored and a RBI. He added two walks. Chad Hunt and Max Garza each had a single. Hunt had two runs scored.

For Briar Cliff, Travis Evgen and Rene Siller each had two singles. Brendon Opsahl had a double. Jacob Olivas recorded a single.

Lincoln Gassman (2-1) recorded the victory for the Trojans. He pitched 5 1/3 innings. Gassman gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out five batters. Samuel Lopez closed the game for DSU in 1 2/3 innings. He limited the Chargers to no hits and runs. Lopez recorded three strike outs.

Nathanael Olson suffered the loss for Briar Cliff. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits. Kasey Neumann came in for 2/3 innings of relief and allowed three runs on three hits. Beau Brown and Justin Green each pitched 2/3 innings of relief.

Game Two

Briar Cliff scored three runs in the second and third innings to give the Chargers' 6-0 lead. The Trojans scored four times in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as DSU fell short.

Hunt had a double and two RBIs for the Trojans. Figueroa added two singles. Hargrove recorded a single.

For the Chargers, Opsahl recorded a double and a RBI. Olivas and Siller each had two singles. Jeremy Majeres, David Kowal, Evgen and Lincoln Dunham each had a single.

The Trojans committed five errors in the game compared to the Chargers' one.

Jared Donahue (1-2) took the loss for DSU. He pitched a complete game. Donahue allowed six runs, three unearned, on nine hits. He struck out eight batters.

Nick Hegge recorded the victory for Briar Cliff. He tossed five innings and gave up four runs, two unearned, on three hits. Garret Linhard closed the game in two innings. He recorded a save and limited the Trojans to one hit.

The Trojans will head to Yankton, S.D. for one nine-inning game with Mount Marty today (Monday).
