Baseball: Trojans' rally falls short to Mount Marty

Ryan SteffensenYANKTON, S.D. - The Trojan baseball team played one nine-inning non-conference game with Mount Marty at the Riverside Park Monday.  The Trojans fell short to the Lancers 5-3.

The loss dropped the Trojans' overall record to 6-10.  The Lancers won their seventh-straight game and raised their overall record to 12-5.

The Lancers scored a run in the bottom of the first inning.  Josh Wenande opened the inning with a walk.  Trey Krier hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Nathan Roche, courtesy runner for Wenande.  Zach Lambrecths hit a RBI single to score Roche.

In a bases loaded, two out situation for the Lancers in the bottom of the third inning, Ross Heine was hit by pitch and recorded a RBI to score Jason Schmidt.

Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the top fifth inning.  Ryan Steffensen hit a RBI single to score Donald Strand to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Lancers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 3-1.

Lancer Josh Damewood hit a two-run home run to put Mount Marty's lead to 5-1 by the end of the seventh inning.

Derek Grundmann hit a RBI double to score Steffensen in the eighth inning.  Bob Olson recorded a sacrifice fly RBI to score Jose Figueroa to cut the deficit to 5-3, but the Trojans fell short in the final inning.

Steffensen was 3-for-4 behind the plate with a double and two singles for the Trojans.  Grundmann and Strand was 1-for-3 each.  Grundmann and Olson each had one RBI.

For Mount Marty, Wenande went 2-for-4 with a double.  Damewood was 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.  Dillon Lambley had two singles.  Trey Krier and Lambrechts each recorded a single.

Jerod Burleson (0-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans.  He tossed five innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  Nick Mutz pitched three innings of relief.  He allowed three runs on three hits.  Mutz struck out three batters.

Krier recorded his second pitching victory for Mount Marty.  He went five innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits.  Krier struck out five batters.  Allen Hemeyer came in relief for three innings.  He gave up two runs on two hits.  Schmidt recorded his fourth save of the season as he shut down the Trojans in the ninth inning.

Dakota State will travel to Rapid City, S.D. on Saturday and Sunday.  The Trojans will compete in the DAC Pre-season tournament.  DSU will face Valley City State and Minot State on Saturday.  On Sunday, the Trojans will play Jamestown and Dickinson State.
