Trojans split with Cougars in softball action

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team played University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference doubleheader at the Sherman Park Thursday. The Cougars won game one in extra innings 4-3. The Trojans scored four runs in the seventh inning and held on to defeat USF 4-3 to earn a split with the Cougars.
Dakota State snapped their six-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 3-8. University of Sioux Falls is 1-3.
Game One
The Trojans opened the game with three straight singles from Ashley Souphimdara, Kelsie Peterson and Ashley Stevenson. Ashley Stevenson hit a RBI single to score Souphimdara to put the Trojans up 1-0.
USF got on board in the bottom of the third inning. A wild pitch by Trojan Ashton Lansink scored USF’s Janni Brylla to tie the game at 1-1. The Cougars added another run by Caitlin Block’s sacrifice bunt RBI to score Andrea Hacker for USF’s 2-1 lead.
DSU’s Laura Shanafelt hit a RBI single to score Jayna Ackerman to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning.
Baylee Washburn recorded a RBI single to score Block to break up the 2-2 tie to give USF a 3-2 by the end of the fifth inning.
The Trojans rallied in the sixth inning with one run scored to tie the game at 3-3. Peterson hit a RBI triple to deep center to score Souphimdara.
DSU and USF did not score in the seventh inning and forced extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, USF set up their scoring opportunity in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brylla reached on base from her infield single and advanced to second base on a wild throw. Block hit a RBI single to score Brylla to give the Cougars’ 4-3 victory.
Both teams had 11 hits in the game.
Souphimdara went 3-for-5 behind the plate for the Trojans. Peterson and Ashley Stevenson each went 2-for-5 and recorded a RBI. Leslie Neiman had two singles.
For USF, Brylla and Washburn each had two singles. Christina Bonrud recorded a double. Block went 1-for-2 with a run scored, two RBIs and two walks.
Dakota State recorded five stolen bases in the game. Souphimdara swiped two bases. Ackerman, Peterson and Brittany Haiar each recorded a stolen base.
Ashton Lansink (1-5) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She tossed 8 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on 11 hits. She struck out two batters.
Brylla started the game for USF. She pitched four innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Bonrud (1-1) tossed five innings in relief and recorded the victory. She limited the Trojans to one run on three hits. She struck out four batters.
Game Two
USF scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Jamie Sorensen hit a RBI single to score Hacker. Lindsay Johnson added another RBI single to score Washburn for USF’s 2-0 early lead.
Both teams were not able to score until the seventh and final inning.
Dakota State rallied in the seventh inning with four runs. Shanafelt opened the inning with a single to shallow right field. Souphimdara added a single and advanced Shanafelt to second. Peterson reached on base by USF’s error and scored Shanafelt to cut USF’s lead to 2-1. Amanda Stevenson hit a RBI single to score Souphimdara and tied the game at 2-2. Ackerman’s RBI single to score Peterson gave the Trojans’ first lead of the game at 3-2. A wild pitch by USF’s Johnson to score Ashley Stevenson helped Trojans to extend their lead to 4-2.
The Cougars tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, USF drew two straight walks from Johnson and Bonrud. DSU’s Maddie Willers struck out Cougar Katie Farley with two outs. Shae Reinke drew a walk and set up a bases loaded situation for the Cougars. Willers gave another walk to Brylla and scored Johnson to cut the deficit to 4-3. The game ended with Hacker’s ground out to pitcher mound as the Trojans held on for victory.
Ackerman went perfect behind the plate for the Trojans, going 3-for-3 with three singles. Shanafelt was 2-for-3 and recorded a run. Haiar, Amanda Stevenson and Souphimdara each had a single. Souphimdara swiped one base.
Hacker, Sorenson and Johnson each had two singles for USF. Farley had one stolen base.
Lansink started the game for DSU. She pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Willers (2-3) recorded the victory for the Trojans. She pitched 5 1/3 innings and limited the Cougars to one run on four hits. She struck out four batters.
Johnson (0-1) pitched a complete game and recorded the loss for USF. She gave up four runs, one earned, on eight hits. She struck out five hitters.
USF left 13 runners on base. The Trojans had ten runners left on base.
Dakota State will continue their play on the road on Monday. The Trojans will face Mount Marty in a non-conference doubleheader action starting at 4 p.m. The game will be held at the Riverside Park in Yankton, S.D.
