Trojans go 2-0 in DAC Preseason Tournament, beat Blue Hawks 3-1

Box Score vs. Dickinson State

Jose FigueroaRAPID CITY, S.D. - The Trojan baseball team traveled 25 miles south of Sturgis for a game with Dickinson State at the Pete Lien Memorial Field Sunday evening. Dakota State defeated Dickinson State 3-1 to go 2-0 in the DAC Baseball Preseason Tournament.

The Trojans won their second straight game and raised their record to 8-10. Dickinson State dropped to 10-8.

Dakota State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Brian White opened the inning with a walk. Jose Figueroa singled down the left field line to advance White to third base. Jared DonahueChad Hunt hit a RBI single to score White to give Trojans’ 1-0 lead. Dakota State added another run Josh Tiede RBI sacrifice fly to score Donald Strand, courtesy runner for Figueroa.

Figueroa hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning to give the Trojans’ 3-0 lead.

Dickinson State scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Nolan Bracken opened the fourth inning with a walk. Derrick Gunderson hit a RBI double to deep left field to score Bracken.Nick Mutz

Figueroa finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, a single and a RBI for Dakota State. Hunt and Chance Hargrove each added a single. Hunt and Tiede each recorded a RBI.

For Dickinson State, Hector Sanchez recorded a triple. Bracken, Gunderson, and Cole Zamira each had a double.

Trojan Jared Donahue (2-2) tossed six impressive innings for the victory. He struck out 11 batters. He gave up one run on three hits. Nick Mutz pitched one shutout inning for his second save of the season. He struck out three hitters.

Ryan Saunders (0-4) took the loss for the Blue Hawks. He pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on four hits. He struck out four batters.

Dakota State will attempt to make it three straight wins as the Trojans host Mount Marty in a single game on Wednesday night. The Trojans’ home opener will be a nine-inning game starting at 6 p.m.  The game will be held at the Flynn Field.
