Trojans defeat Vikings in DAC Baseball Preseason Tournament

Box Score vs. Valley City State

Jose FigueroaSTURGIS, S.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team faced Valley City State in a non-conference game at the Strong Field on a sunny, warm Sunday afternoon. The Trojans hit three home runs combined with strong pitching performance to defeat Valley City State 9-3 in the DAC Baseball Preseason Tournament.

The win lifted DSU’s overall record to 7-10. The Vikings dropped to 3-10.

Dakota State began their scoring run in the top of the second inning. Jose Figueroa hit a double to deep left field. Josh Tiede reached first base by a defensive error by the Vikings and advanced Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for Figueroa, to third base. After Tiede recorded a stolen base to second base, Josh TiedeChance Hargrove walked to make it a bases-loaded, one out situation for the Trojans. Zane Roduner hit a fielder’s choice RBI to score Palmer and a second defensive error by the Vikings to score Tiede gave the Trojans’ 2-0 lead. Bob Olson added a RBI double to score Rounder and Ryan Steffenson recorded a RBI single to score Olson to extend DSU’s lead to 4-0.

Tiede opened the top fourth inning with a solo home run to right-center on a 3-1 count to expand Trojans’ lead to 5-0.

Chance HargroveMatt Borgford hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 5-1.

In the top sixth inning, Hargrove hit a line drive home run to left field to put the Trojans ‘ lead to 6-1.

Valley City State scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-3 DSU. Josh Evans hit a solo home run and Michael Danielson added a RBI hit by pitch with bases loaded.

Lincoln GassmanFigueroa added a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to score Chad Hunt and pinch hitter Kelly Eppers-Hall to make it the final score.

Hargrove, Roduner and Olson each went 2-for-3 behind the plate, scored once and recorded a RBI for Dakota State. Roduner added a double. Figueroa added three RBIs. Hunt recorded three walks. Derek Grundmann, Eppers-Hall and Steffenson each had a single.

For Valley City State, Brenden Shearer went 2-for-3 from the bench. Preston Jensen, Josh Standing Elk and Justin Connell each had a single.

Lincoln Gassman won his second straight decision to raise his overall record to 3-1 for the Trojans. He tossed 5 1/3 strong innings and gave up three hits on six hits. He struck out eight batters. Samuel Lopez pitched 2/3 innings in relief and gave up no runs. Josh Caven closed the game for the Trojans and gave up one hit.

Dan Maurer (1-1) suffered the loss for Valley City State. He pitched four innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out five batters. Three pitchers (John Daluge, Zach Michaelson and Logan Midthun) combined for three innings of relief and allowed a total of four runs on six hits.

The Trojans will travel 25 miles from Sturgis to Rapid City for a nightcap with Dickinson State at 6 p.m. (CT)/5 p.m. (MT).
