BA: Trojans defeat Mt. Marty in slugfest at Flynn Field

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team played their first home game of the season Wednesday night with Mount Marty at the Flynn Field. The Trojans used a nine-run seventh inning to rally from 12-8 deficit to defeat the Lancers 17-12.
The Trojans won their third straight game and lifted their overall record to 9-10. DSU snapped the Lancers’ four-game winning streak. MMC dropped their record to 17-7.
The Lancers exploded the first inning with four runs scored. Mount Marty scored the first run by Zach Lambrechts’ sacrifice fly to score Joe Tyrell, courtesy runner for Josh Wenande. Josh Damewood added a RBI single to score Jason Schmidt. Ross Heine hit a 2-RBI triple to score Damewood and Andy Turbak.
Dakota State rallied back to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning. Chance Hargrove hit a double. Garrett Gassman hit a RBI single to score Hargrove for Trojans’ first run of the game. With bases loaded, Brian White reached on base with a RBI hit-by-pitch to score Gassman. Jose Figueroa and Chad Hunt recorded a back-to-back RBI walk to score Zane Roduner and Bob Olson, respectively.
Mount Marty scored six unearned runs to break up the 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth inning. The Trojans cut the deficit to 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Both teams combined for eight runs, seven hits and five errors in the fifth inning.
White recorded his first solo home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 10-7. Hargrove added a RBI hit-by-pitch to score Chaz Palmer, courtesy runner for Figueroa, to reduce the Lancers’ lead to 10-8.
Mount Marty answered back with two runs scored in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 12-8.
Pinch hitter Ryan Steffensen hit a triple to deep right field in the bottom of the seventh inning to start the Trojans’ nine-run inning rally.
DSU scored five straight runs from Steffensen, White, Palmer and Hunt to overtake a 13-12 lead. With two outs, Max Garza hit a 3-RBI double to score Olson, Steffensen and White to extend the Trojans’ lead to 17-12.
The Trojans’ defense held on to the victory by shutting down the Lancers in the eighth and ninth innings.
A total of 14 errors were committed in the game – eight by Mount Marty and six by Dakota State.
White finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for Dakota State. Hargrove went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Figueroa and Gassman each went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Roduner had two singles. White and Garza recorded three RBIs. Palmer scored three times.
For Mount Marty, Damewood went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Heine had a triple and a single with two runs scored and two RBIs. Turbak went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
Samuel Lopez started on the mound for the Trojans. He pitched two innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits. Nick Bird came in for 2 2/3 innings and gave up six unearned runs on four hits. Josh Caven pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief after Bird. He allowed two runs on three hits. Nick Mutz (2-1) recorded the victory as he limited the Lancers to no runs and two hits in the last 2 2/3 innings of the game. He struck out four batters.
Nick Wenande tossed the first five innings for Mount Marty. He allowed six runs (one earned) on six hits. He struck out three batters. Brett Bosn allowed two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Jake Broscha (0-1) suffered the loss for the Lancers. He pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up six runs (four unearned) on five hits. Adam McVay came in the bottom of the seventh inning and allowed three unearned runs on two hits. Josh Homme closed the game for 1 1/3 innings. He limited the Trojans to no runs and hits.
Dakota State will open their DAC Conference play this weekend, hosting Valley City State in a four-game series. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Flynn Field. The Trojans defeated the Vikings 9-3 on March 28 in Sturgis, S.D. in both teams’ first meeting.
