BA: Trojans open DAC conference play with sweep over Valley City State

MADISON, S.D. - Dakota State and Valley City State opened their DAC Baseball conference play at the Flynn Field Friday. The Trojans survived Vikings’ late rally in the first game 11-10. DSU defeated VCSU in the second game 10-1.
The Trojans won their fifth straight game and raised their overall record to 11-10 and 2-0 in the DAC conference play. Valley City State dropped to 4-15 overall and 0-2 in the DAC.
Game One
A wild pitch by Trojan Jared Donahue to score Colin Waldner gave the Vikings’ 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
With bases loaded and two-out situation in the bottom of the second inning, Jose Figueroa reached on base by hit-by-pitch RBI to tie the game at 1-1.
Bob Olson hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third inning for the Trojans’ 4-1 lead.
DSU added three more runs to extend their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning. Ryan Steffensen recorded a RBI walk to score Chance Hargrove. Figueroa added 2-RBI double to score Zane Roduner and Olson.
Waldner hit a 3-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to cut Trojans’ deficit to 7-4.
Olson was hit by pitch with bases loaded to add a run for the Trojans in the bottom of the sixth inning (8-4).
VCSU exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead.
Viking Josh Evans added a solo home run in eighth inning to make it 10-8 VCSU.
Dakota State rallied for three runs, all caused by Vikings’ defensive errors to take an 11-10 lead.
Trojan Nick Mutz shut down the Vikings in the ninth inning as DSU held on to victory.
Roduner went 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Dakota State. Bob Olson recorded four RBIs and three runs scored. Steffensen added two singles and recorded two walks. Figueora had three RBIs.
For Valley City State, Waldner went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and recorded three RBIs. Michael Danielsen added a double, single and two RBIs. Tanner Bombenger had two singles.
The Trojans left 16 runners on base. Valley City State had nine runners left on base.
DSU was hit by pitch 11 times in the game.
Donahue started the game for Dakota State. He pitched six innings and gave up eight runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Donahue struck out 12 batters. Nick Bird came in relief for one inning. He allowed two runs on three hits. Samuel Lopez (1-0) recorded the victory for the Trojans. He pitched one inning and limited the Vikings to one hit. Mutz recorded his third save of the season.
Viking’s starting pitcher Derek Zitzow tossed five innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits. John Daluge pitched 1/3 innings in relief and gave up one run. Logan Midthun came in for 2/3 innings. Zach Noriega (0-1) suffered the loss for the Vikings. He pitched two innings and allowed three unearned runs on two hits.
Game Two
The Trojans exploded for four runs in the opening inning. Tiede hit a 3-run home run and Hargrove added a solo home run for DSU’s 4-0 lead.
DSU added a run in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-0 lead. Tiede scored caused by Vikings’ defensive error.
The Vikings scored once in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Trojans’ lead to 5-1. A wild pitch by Trojan Lincoln Gassman scored Josh Lawrence (courtesy runner for Justin Connell).
Dakota State extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning by Roduner’s RBI single to score Hargrove.
The Trojans added four runs in the sixth inning to make the final score (10-1). Hargrove hit a 2-RBI single to score Brian White and Donald Strand. Derek Grundman and Roduner each added a RBI single.
Hargrove and Roduner each went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Trojans. Tiede went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and recorded three RBIs. Grundmann added a single and a RBI. White had two walks.
Connell went 3-for-4 with two doubles for VCSU. Danielson recorded a double. Josh Standing Elk and Brenden Shearer each had a single.
Gassman (4-1) pitched a complete game victory for DSU. He allowed one unearned run on six hits. He struck out seven batters.
Shane Schoeneberg (1-2) suffered the loss for Valley City State. He gave up 10 runs (two unearned) on nine hits. He struck out five batters.
Dakota State and Valley City State conclude their four-game series Saturday at the Flynn Field. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
