DSU Blue & Gold Tournament 'awesome' record-setter
June 15, 2010
"This was an awesome tournament," said Gene Wockenfuss, DSU athletic director at the conclusion of Blue & Gold Golf Tournament at the Madison Golf & Country Club on June 4th. The tournament featured 34 foursomes taking to the 18-hole course.
"This was the largest turnout ever for the tournament," added Wockenfuss. The tourney is held annually with all net proceeds going to Dakota State athletic scholarships. "If this tourney's turnout is any indication of future support, we have exciting times ahead for DSU athletics."
Prior to Friday's event, Wockenfuss and the rest of DSU's athletic department targeted $10,000 as its goal. "We haven't computed the final figures, but we're going to be right at that goal," he said.
A good share of the tourney's success went to the outstanding weather, and especially the efforts of Carla Sudenga, DSU athletic dept. executive secretary and the Madison Golf & Country Club staff, according to Wockenfuss.
As for the competition side of the tournament, three foursomes topped their respective flights' fields.
The quartet of Rick and Richard Dunlap and Kody and Bill Kriech were first-flight winners with their 57.
Wayne Pauli and the Halversons -- Tom, Dave and Mike -- won second-flight honors on a scoreboard tiebreaker against Jeff Nelson, Jenn Gross, Bob Sahr and Randy Hoffman. Both teams ended play with a pair of 65s.
The ladies-flight championship went to Vickie Walters, Karen Dunham, Deb Metzger and Danielle Rosheim who combined to shoot a 72.
