CVB: Trojans go 1-3 at Grand View (Iowa) Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Dakota State University volleyball team competed in the Grand View (Iowa) tournament Friday and Saturday at the Johnson Wellness Center.  The Trojans opened the 2010 season with a win over Midland Lutheran in five thrilling sets on Friday, but lost the next three matches to finish 1-3 in the tournament. 

Dakota State 3, Midland Lutheran 2 - Box Score

The Warriors won the opening set 26-24.  DSU rallied to take the second set by the score of 27-25.

Midland Lutheran, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, took the third set with a score of 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Trojans won the fourth set (25-22) to force the deciding set.  DSU won the fifth set by three points (15-12).

Margie Anthony recorded 13 kills for the Trojans.  Ashley Schulte added 12 kills.  Amy Pheneger had nine kills.  She had six service aces, which she tied for second most aces in a single match in the Trojan Volleyball record book.  Mollie Merriam recorded 34 assists.

In defense, Mandi Atkins had 18 digs.  Pheneger and Merriam each added 12 digs.

The Trojans had 53 kills and 11 service aces in the match.

Grand View (Iowa) 3, Dakota State 1 - Box Score

The host team Vikings took the first two sets of the match (25-16 and 25-23).  Dakota State remained alive by winning the third set (25-23), but fell short in the fourth set 25-17.

DSU's Stephanie Kruggel recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 16 assists.  Anthony added eight kills.  Merriam had 11 assists.

Atkins recorded 16 digs for the Trojans.  Pheneger added 11 digs.  Mandy Frogner and Mandy Baxa each had 1.5 blocks.

Evangel (Mo.) 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score

On Saturday, the Trojans were swept by Evangel (Mo.), 25-15, 25-12, 25-12.

Schulte and Anthony each had four kills for the Trojans.  Merriam recorded six assists.

Stephanie Uher had nine digs for DSU.

The Trojans hit .036 in the match.

McKendree (Ill.) 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score

McKendree (Ill.) won the opening set by the score of 25-22 and raced through the second set (25-11).  The Trojans fell short in the third set , 26-24 to conclude the tournament.

Kruggel had 10 kills for DSU.  She added eight assists and nine digs.  Anthony added nine kills and 13 digs.  Merriam had 21 assists.

Atkins recorded 14 digs for the Trojans.

Dakota State will attempt to snap their three-match losing steak on Tuesday.  The Trojans will travel to Mount Marty of the GPAC in a non-conference match in Yankton, S.D.  First serve is slated at 7 p.m.
