CFB: Trojans lose season opener at home

Box Score vs. Midland Lutheran
MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University football team hosted Midland Lutheran College of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Saturday night at Trojan Field. The Warriors raced to a 28-0 halftime lead and defeated the Trojans 38-7.
It was the season opener for both teams as the Trojans dropped their overall record to 0-1.
Midland Lutheran scored on their opening drive of game. The Warriors scored on Khalid Waters 53-yard touchdown run. Aaron Chambers added the PAT kick to make it 7-0 Warriors.
DSU quarterback Paul Bagala opened the Trojans first drive with a 35-yard pass completion to Stacey Berg. DSU couldn't covert on a Dennis Lechner's 42-yard field goal kick.
MLC Bryce Mallette intercepted Bagala's pass and returned for a 10-yard touchdown to give the Warriors a 13-0 lead with 8:16 left in the first quarter. Chambers added a PAT kick to make it 14-0.
DSU had their opportunity to score in the early second quarter. Lechner missed a 40-yard field goal that was blocked by Warrior Ronnie McLaughlin.
After Bagala's interception on the Trojans own 24-yard line in the middle of the second quarter, Midland Lutheran scored a 1-yard touchdown run from Anthony White. Chambers kicked the PAT kick to make it 21-0.
With 3:52 left before intermission, the Warriors used a three play, 50-yard touchdown-scoring drive, which was capped off by Waters 14-yard rushing touchdown. Chambers added the PAT kick to make it 28-0.
Late in the third quarter, Chambers missed a 48-yard field goal that was hit the front end of the goal post. Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter.
Chambers made a 34-yard field goal for the Warriors in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 31-0.
The Trojans broke their scoring drought with Bagala's 28-yard touchdown pass to Carl Curtis. DSU used 11 plays and 69 yards in 3:40 in their lone scoring drive. Lechner added the PAT kick to make it 31-7.
Jeff Waters added a six-yard rushing touchdown for the Warriors. Chambers added an extra point kick to make it 38-7 Warriors.
Midland Lutheran out gained the Trojans 306-61 in rushing yards. DSU had 173 passing yards compared to the Warriors' 114. MLC had 420 total yards to Trojans' 234.
The Trojans held the ball for 32:51 compared to the Warriors' 27:09.
Bagala went 15-for-40 for 173 yards for the Trojans. He recorded a touchdown and three interceptions. Curtis had three receptions for 79 yards. Drew Allen rushed eight times for 33 yards. Matt Engelmann recorded 14 rushes for 23 yards.
Jerry Denogean went 6-for-15 with 102 yards for Midland Lutheran. He threw an interception. Kurt Walsch went 3-for-11 for 12 yards and an interception. Khalid Waters rushed 20 times for 197 yards. Tyler Gimbert added five rushes for 59 yards. David Weld had two receptions for 62 yards.
Dax Thompson had two sacks for the Trojans. Josh Windsor and Eric Liles each recorded nine tackles. Austen Hanten and Joe Whealy each added seven tackles.
Six different players recorded a sack for Midland Lutheran. Branden Brown had 10 tackles. Reed Manstedt added nine tackles.
The Trojans will travel to Whitewater, Wis., on Sept. 11. DSU will take on NCAA Division III University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at noon. Midland Lutherans next opponent will be against NAIA's No. 1 University of Sioux Falls in Fremont, Neb. on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
