Trojans sweep Lancers in volleyball action

YANKTON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team traveled to the Cimpl Arena to take on Mount Marty College in a non-conference match Tuesday night. The Trojans won the first two sets in dominating fashion and held on to sweep the Lancers 3-0.
DSU snapped their three-match losing streak and raised their overall record to 2-3. The Trojans are currently 2-0 against teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), including a win against Midland Lutheran in Trojans' season opener last Friday. Mount Marty dropped their overall record to 0-1.
Tied 12-12 in the first set, Dakota State scored 13 of the next 15 points to take on the first set win by the score of 25-14. The Trojans scored seven consecutive points during the stretch.
DSU led 10-9 in the early second set. The Trojans went on a 15-6 run to take a 25-15 second set victory.
There were four early ties and eight ties in all in the third set as the Trojans held on to a 25-23 win.
Margie Anthony produced 10 kills for Dakota State. Stephanie Kruggel added eight kills and seven digs. Mandy Frogner had seven kills. Mollie Merriam recorded 25 assists.
For Mount Marty, Maggie Goree and Katie Lingscheit each had six kills. Kayla Ranek and Jen Jerdee recorded five digs each. Tina Rowbotham had seven set assists.
The Trojans will compete in the University of Sioux Falls Tournament on Friday and Saturday. DSU will face two GPAC teams on Friday, versus Nebraska Wesleyan at 2 p.m. and Briar Cliff at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Trojans will face MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) at noon and Iowa Wesleyan at 6 p.m.
