Trojans drop two matches at USF Volleyball Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team competed in the first day of the University of Sioux Falls Classic at the Stewart Center on Friday. The Trojans faced two teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). DSU suffered two sweeps from nationally-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) and Briar Cliff.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-5.
#5 Northwestern (Iowa) 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
The Trojans faced a team that qualified for NAIA Volleyball National tournament last year. Northwestern (Iowa), No. 5 in the NAIA Volleyball preseason national poll, swept the Trojans, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16.
In the third set, the Red Raiders used a 16-7 scoring run to break up a 9-9 tie.
Margie Anthony led the Trojans' offense attack with seven kills. Ashley Schulte added four kills and two solo blocks. Mollie Merriam produced 20 assists.
Amy Pheneger contributed 14 digs for the Trojans. Anthony added nine digs.
For Northwestern, Hillary Hanno had 10 kills. Katie Buyert added six kills and four block assists. Rylee Hulstein recorded six kills and nine digs. Kaitlin Beaver contributed 27 assists.
As a team, Dakota State recorded eight service errors with a .826 serving percentage. The Red Raiders had nine service errors.
Northwestern outhit the Trojans 38-24 and .400-.145. The Red Raiders had 15 block assists.
The Trojans and Red Raiders will meet again on Sept. 10 in the Hastings Tournament at 5 p.m.
Briar Cliff 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
The Trojans fell short in each set to Briar Cliff. The Chargers won in three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23.
Anthony had 13 kills for the Trojans. Stephanie Kruggel and Merriam each had five kills. Merriam recorded 22 assists and two blocks.
DSU's Mandi Atkins had 12 digs and two service aces. Katie Green added 13 digs.
For Briar Cliff, Liz Krog produced 17 digs. Amber Skoglund had 10 digs. Nicole Hoogeveen added eight kills.
Dakota State suffered 10 service errors in the match. The Trojans had a serving percentage of .851.
DSU will try to bounce back in the winning column Saturday. The Trojans will face MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) at the Sioux Falls Lincoln high school gym at noon. The Trojans conclude the USF Classic versus Iowa Wesleyan at the Stewart Center at 6 p.m.
