Trojan Football loses DAC conference opener in Dickinson

DICKINSON, N.D. - The Dakota State University football team traveled to the Badland Activities Center to face Dickinson State in both teams' DAC conference season opener Saturday. The Blue Hawks defeated the Trojans 31-7.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-3 and 0-1 in the DAC conference. Dickinson State, No. 13 in the first NAIA Football national poll, won their third straight game to start the season.
Dickinson State scored the first points of the game in the first quarter. Cody Holland threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Derek Pauley. The PAT kick by Tury Escobedo was good to give the Blue Hawks' 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Blue Hawks added 15 points to extend their lead to 22-0 before intermission. Brennan Haugian scored two rushing touchdowns (10-yard and 1-yard). Blue Hawk Escobedo added a PAT kick and the Blue Hawks converted a two-point conversion.
Both teams were unable to score in the third quarter.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the fourth quarter. Drew Allen scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 22-6. Dennis Lechner made the PAT kick to make it 22-7. The Trojans used 14 plays for 97 yards in the scoring drive.
The Blue Hawks added a 35-yard touchdown pass from Holland to Tanner Leak to give the Blue Hawks' 28-7 lead. The PAT kick by Escobedo was no good.
Escobedo added a 24-yard field goal for the Blue Hawks to extend their lead to 31-7.
The Blue Hawks outgained the Trojans 343-230. Dickinson State rushed for 153 yards compared to the Trojans' 71. The Blue Hawks had 190 passing yards to the Trojans' 159.
Both teams had 18 first downs in the game.
The Trojans had four fumbles and lost twice in the game. Dickinson State had two fumbles and lost once.
DSU's Paul Bagala went 20-for-37 for 118 yards with one interception. Allen rushed 17 times for 44 yards and recorded a touchdown. Luke Tinklenberg had five receptions for 73 yards. Darrik Bunker added three catches for 37 yards. Derek Kreutzfeldt had four receptions for 21 yards.
For Dickinson State, Holland went 11-for-19 for 190 yards. He recorded two touchdowns and an interception. Jeremy Herr rushed 13 times for 45 yards. Haughian added seven rushes for 35 yards and recorded two touchdowns. Leak had four receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. Pauley added three catches for 65 yards and recorded a touchdown.
Joe Whealy led the Trojans with 14 tackles. Craig Hertz and Wes Heimstra each added 10 tackles. Hertz recorded an interception and forced a fumble.
Zach McCoy had 10 tackles for Dickinson State. Jason Kraft added eight tackles. Mike Fisher caught an interception and returned for 70 yards.
Dakota State returns home on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Trojans will host South Dakota School of Mines as part of the Trojan Homecoming activities. Kick-off is slated at 6 p.m. at the Trojan Field.
