Hardrockers defeat Trojans in volleyball action

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team continued their five-match home stand on Saturday. The Trojans hosted South Dakota School of Mines in the DAC conference action at the DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State won the first set 26-24, but fell in the last three sets won by the Hardrockers (25-23, 25-15 and 25-18).
Dakota State dropped their overall record their overall record to 5-11 and 0-2 in the DAC conference. South Dakota School of Mines raised their overall record to 8-7 and 1-1 in the DAC.
In the first set, both teams tied the score in 10 occasions. With Trojans leading at 24-22, the Hardrockers scored two straight points by Janelle Strampe's kills to tie the game at 24-24. Dakota State called their second time-out of the set and then scored two straight points to close the first set at 26-24.
SD School of Mines scored three straight points to open the second set. The Hardrockers expanded their lead to 12-7 before the Trojans called a time-out. Dakota State went on a 9-1 run, including five straight points (four by DSU's Mandy Baxa's service aces), to overtake the lead at 16-13. The Hardrockers rallied to tie the game at 18-18. Tied at 23-23, SD Mines scored the last two points to take the second set win by the score of 25-23.
The Trojans fell behind in the third set as the Hardrockers raced to a 13-7 lead. The Hardrockers won the third set (25-15).
In the fourth set, South Dakota School of Mines went on a 6-1 scoring run. The Hardrockers extended their largest lead at 20-10. The Trojans scored five straight points to trim the Hardrockers' lead at 20-15, but fell short as the Hardrockers secured the fourth set (25-18).
South Dakota School of Mines outhit the Trojans 55-35 and .270-.171.
The Trojans suffered 14 serving errors compared to the Hardrockers' 10. SD Mines had nine service aces to the Trojans' eight.
Amy Pheneger led the Trojans' offense with seven kills. Stephanie Kruggel, Mollie Merriam and Margie Anthony each added six kills. Merriam contributed 11 set assists. Kruggel added nine assists.
Mandi Atkins had 15 digs for Dakota State. Pheneger added 13 digs.
Baxa recorded five service aces in the match for DSU. She added five block assists.
For South Dakota School of Mines, three players recorded in double digits kills. Justine Blade had 14 kills and three service aces. Madisen Lane added 12 kills. Daygan Fowler recorded 10 kills. Renna Roberson had a double-double of 26 assists and 10 digs.
Rachel Pekarek recorded 20 digs for the Hardrockers.
Dakota State attempts to record their first home win of the season on Wednesday, the Trojans will host Mount Marty College in a non-conference match at the DSU Fieldhouse. First serve is at 7 p.m.
