Trojan Football comes up short for first ‘W’ Saturday

Travis BirdSPEARFISH, S.D. – The Dakota State University Trojan football team traveled to the Lyle Hare Stadium Saturday to face Black Hills State in the seventh annual Missouri River Shootout.  The Trojans held a 9-7 halftime lead before the Yellow Jackets rallied in the late fourth quarter for a 14-9 win over DSU.

The Trojans remained winless in five games and 0-3 in the DAC conference.  Black Hills State, received votes in the latest NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll, won their fourth straight game to lift their overall record to 4-1.  The Yellow Jackets are one of the four undefeated teams in three DAC conference games.

Carl CurtisBHSU has won six straight Missouri River Shootout games, which was started in 2004.  The Yellow Jackets own a 6-1 series record over the Trojans.

In the opening drive for the Yellow Jackets, Drew Hodgs threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Wes Kragt for a 6-0 lead.  The PAT kick by Chris Wenk was good to make it 7-0 BHSU.  The Yellow Jackets used three plays and 51 yards in one minute and seven seconds in their scoring drive.

Dakota State got on the scoreboard in the late first quarter.  Dennis Lechner kicked a 46-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3. The Trojans used seven plays for 49 yards.

In the early second quarter, DSU's Travis Bird intercepted Hodgs' pass at the DSU's 46-yard line and returned for 54-yard touchdown.  Lechner's PAT kick was no good as the Trojans led at 9-7 before intermission.

The Trojans opened the second half with 11 plays and 47 yards in 6:33, but failed their scoring opportunity as the Trojans were three yards short for a first down on BHSU 23-yard line.

Both teams were unable to score in the third quarter.

Black Hills State rallied in the fourth quarter a three-yard touchdown from Hodgs with 5:29 remaining in the game and regained their lead at 13-9.  Wenk's PAT kick was good to make it 14-9 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets outgained the Trojans 333-213 in total yards.  BHSU had one more first down than the Trojans (14-13).

DSU's Paul Bagala went 13-for-36 for 161 yards and recorded an interception.  Carl Curtis had six receptions for 116 yards.  Mike Trimble rushed 25 times for 46 yards.

For Black Hills State, Hodgs was 15-for-29 with 146 yards. He threw an interception and a touchdown.  Drew Nielsen carried the ball 19 times for 127 yards.  Kragt had five receptions for 72 yards and recorded a touchdown.

Craig Hertz led the Trojans with 11 tackles.   Bryce Logan added eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss of 3.5 yards.  Josh Licht had two sacks.  Bird recorded an interception and returned for 54 yards. He had five tackles.

Dakota State returns home on Saturday, Oct. 9 as they host Minot State.  Kickoff is slated at 1:30 p.m. at the Trojan Field as part of Parents' Day event.
