Trojans snap four-match losing streak in a five-set thriller over Comets

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team traveled to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to face their DAC's traveling partner Mayville State Wednesday night. The Trojans defeated the Comets in a five-set thriller (22-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-12 and 15-9) to snap their four-match losing streak.
Dakota State ended their DAC conference's first half with a 2-5 record and raised their overall record to 8-15. The Trojans moved in a three-way tie for fifth place in the DAC standings with South Dakota School of Mines and Valley City State. Mayville State lost their sixth straight match and dropped their overall record to 2-17 and 1-6 in the conference.
Mayville State scored the first three points in the first set. With the Comets leading at 16-11, the Trojans used a 7-2 scoring run to tie the first set at 19-19. Mayville State closed out the first set with a 6-3 run to secure a 25-22 win.
The second set featured eight ties between the Trojans and Comets. The Comets led at 20-19, but the Trojans went on a 6-2 scoring run to close the second set by the score of 25-22 to even the match at 1-1.
The Comets dominated the Trojans in the third set. The Comets raced to a 13-6 lead before the Trojans called their first time-out of the set. Mayville State went on a 12-6 scoring tear to secure the third set victory by the score of 25-12.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the fourth set, the Trojans went on an 11-1 scoring tear, including seven straight points during the run, to take a 15-5 lead. The Trojans forced the deciding set with a 25-12 fourth set victory.
The Trojans and Comets were tied three times in the first six points (1-1, 2-2 and 3-3) of the fifth set. Dakota State scored six straight points to grab a comfortable 9-3 lead. The Comets cut the deficit to 10-7, but the Trojans secured the victory with a 5-2 run to seal a 3-2 match win.
Dakota State recorded 55 kills and 93 digs in the match.
Amy Pheneger recorded a double-double of 17 kills and 26 digs for Dakota State. She had three service aces. Margie Anthony added 11 kills and three block assists. Mandy Baxa had 10 kills, a solo block and five block assists. Ashley Schulte produced nine kills and two block assists. Mollie Merriam had a double-double of 45 set assists and 17 digs.
Katie Green had 18 digs for the Trojans. Stephanie Kruggel added 16 digs. Mandi Atkins had 10 digs.
Four players recorded in double digits in kills for Mayville State. Ashley Haines had 13 kills. Kacie Fortmann and Brittany Olson each had 12 kills. Nicky Carrison contributed 10 kills.
Ashley Torgusson led the Comets' defense with 15 digs. Fortmann added 14 digs. Ariana Odegard recorded 12 digs and Brittney Lindgren had 10.
Dakota State will return back home Tuesday as they host their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse as part of 'Think Pink' night.
