Bryce LoganVALLEY CITY, N.D. - The Dakota State University football team visited Valley City State on Saturday afternoon at the Lokken Field. Both teams were searching for the first conference win of the season. The Vikings opened with a 26-0 lead and defeated the Trojans 54-10.

Dakota State remained winless in seven games and 0-5 in the DAC conference. Valley City State raised their overall record to 2-5 and recorded their first DAC win in five games.

The Vikings scored the first 26 points of the game in the first half.

DSU scored their first points of the game in the late second quarter. Paul Bagala threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Darrik Bunker. Dennis Lechner made the PAT kick to cut the deficit to 26-7.

Valley City State outscored the Trojans 21-0 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 47-7.

In the fourth quarter, Lechner kicked a 47-yard field goal for DSU to trim the Vikings' lead to 47-10.

VCSU added seven points late in the fourth quarter to make the final score reads 54-10.

The Trojans were held to minus one in rushing yards compared to the Vikings' 323 rushing yards. VCSU outgain DSU 507-180 in total yards.

Bagala went 18-for-35 for 181 yards with a touchdown for the Trojans. Bunker had three receptions for 86 yards.

Trent Kosel recorded six touchdown passes in the game for Valley City State. He went 12-for-17 for 167 yards. Nick Schoenecker had three catches for 58 yards with three touchdowns. LeTheo Proctor added three receptions for 51 yards. Tyler Kosel and Tim Ziemba each caught a touchdown pass.

VCSU's Andy Derilus rushed 13 times for 149 yards and recorded a touchdown. Derek Elliot added 16 rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings committed 13 penalties in the game for 136 yards compared to DSU's five penalties for 45 yards.

Joe Whealy led the Trojans with nine tackles.  Bryce Logan added eight tackles and recorded 3.0 tackles-for-loss of 5.0 yards.  Travis Bird and Craig Hertz each had eight tackles.  Bird recorded a quarterback sack.

Dakota State will play their final home regular season game on Oct. 23 at the Trojan Field. The Trojans welcome the Jimmies of Jamestown College. Kick-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. Seniors will be recognized prior to the game.
