DSU Volleyball goes 2-0 on Black Hills trip

The Dakota State University volleyball team traveled west to face South Dakota School of Mines on Friday night and Black Hills State on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans swept the Hardrockers 3-0 (25-14, 26-24 and 25-20) and won a five-set thriller with the Yellow Jackets (22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25 and 15-10).
Dakota State improved their overall record to 10-16, surpassing last year's total wins. The Trojans won their three straight conference matches on the road and raised their DAC record to 4-5. DSU is currently in fifth place in the DAC's standings, one game behind two teams that are tied for third place (Black Hills State and Minot State with a 5-4 DAC record).
Dakota State 3, SD School of Mines 0 - Box Score
The Trojans traveled to the King Center in Rapid City, S.D. on Friday night to take on the Hardrockers. The Trojans came on top and swept SD Mines to earn a tiebreaker over SD Mines if both teams concluded with the same conference record.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans with 15 kills with no errors in 25 attempts (.600 killing efficiency). Ashley Schulte, Margie Anthony and Mandy Baxa each added five kills. Mollie Merriam produced 28 set assists.
DSU's Katie Green recorded 22 digs. Merriam added 15 digs. Kruggel had 13 digs and Amy Pheneger added 12.
For SD School of Mines, Janelle Strampe had nine kills. Paige Corcoran added seven kills. Becky Keilholtz had 18 assists. Reanna Roberson added 10 assists.
Rachel Pekarek led the Hardrockers' defense with 13 digs.
The Trojans outhit SD Mines 37-33 and .195-.008. The Hardrockers committed 32 attack errors compared to the Trojans' 15.
Dakota State 3, Black Hills State 2 - Box Score
Dakota State visited Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D. The Trojans won in a five-set thriller at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium.
Four Trojan players recorded in double digits in kills. Pheneger and Kruggel each had 14 kills. Anthony added 13 kills. Schulte recorded 11 kills. Merriam contributed 52 assists.
Green led the Trojans' defense with 19 digs. Kruggel added 15 digs. Pheneger had 11 digs.
Schulte had seven block assists for DSU. Kruggel added a solo block and four block assists.
Amy O'Neill had 17 kills for the Yellow Jackets. Maggie O'Neill added 16 kills. Kylee Lamb had 14 kills and Kayla Drieling had 11 attacks. Tori Lounsbery recorded 58 assists.
BHSU's Maggie O'Neill recorded 21 digs. Brittani Casados added 13 digs. Darbi Yost had 11 digs.
The Trojans recorded 11 team blocks compared to the Yellow Jackets' six. BHSU recorded 70 kills in the match compared to DSU's 63.
The Trojans hit .229 to Yellow Jackets' .177.
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak to three matches on Wednesday night. The Trojans host their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference match at the DSU Fieldhouse. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. as part of 'Think Pink' night.
