Trojans have successful 'Think Pink' week
October 27, 2010
The Dakota State University Trojans had a successful 'Think Pink' campaign during athletic events this past week. The Trojan volleyball and football teams along with the student group called "DSU Colleges against Cancer" were involved in the event. 'Think Pink' helps raise awareness about breast cancer and other types of cancers during the month of October. This one way that DSU continued their growth in their NAIA Champions of Character initiative program.
The DSU volleyball team was involved in the event on Oct. 20 in a home match against their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan. Each player was designated to honor or play in memory of a person(s) afflicted with cancer.
Individual posters with the player's picture, along with whom they were playing for were posted on the DSU Fieldhouse wall. Baked goods were sold during the match to raise funds for cancer awareness. The Trojan volleyball team wore pink uniforms during the match.
Marva Jerke, a breast cancer survivor, was honored to do the first serve of the match. Jerke has been with Dakota State for 19 years and is a Program Assistant II at the physical plant.
Then on Oct. 22, DSU and Jamestown College volleyball teams teamed up together for their 'Think Pink' night in Jamestown, N.D.
The Trojan football players wore pink pre-wrap on their arms and pink athletic tape on their shoes on Oct. 23 against Jamestown. Posters were also displayed for the players honoring the person(s) in their lives that have been afflicted with cancer.
Jerke served as an honorary captain for the Dakota State University Trojan Football team. Jerke participated in the pre-game activities including the coin toss. The game was the culmination of a week of cancer awareness activities on the DSU campus.
