No. 20 DWU hands Trojans first loss in men’s basketball

Spencer AdamsMITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team faced their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in the second day of the DWU/Fulton State Bank Classic. The Tigers ended the game with a strong run to defeat the Trojans 78-64 at the Corn Palace.

The Trojans dropped their overall record to 1-1.  Dakota Wesleyan, No. 20 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Division II Preseason Poll, remained undefeated in two games.

With the Tigers leading at 6-4 with 18:17 left in the first-half, DWU used a 27-15 run to lead at 33-19 with less than seven minutes left before halftime. The Trojans trimmed the Tigers' lead to 44-34 by intermission.

Bryce SnyderThe Tigers kept their lead between eight to 12 points in the early second-half. Dakota Wesleyan led 52-40 with 12:07 left in the game. DSU used a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 56-52 with 6:52 remaining.

DWU secured the victory with a 22-12 scoring run in the final six minutes of the game.

Spencer Adams led the Trojans with 25 points. He shot 10-for-22 from the field, including 3-for-9 from the 3-point line. He grabbed seven rebounds. Bryce Snyder went 6-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line for 16 points. Jordan King added seven points. Three players recorded two assists in the game (King, Mike Larsen and Santino Clay).

Four players scored in double digits for DWU. German Madueno was 7-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-5 from the 3-point line for 19 points. Brady Wiebe scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Chase Waldner added 13 points. Larry Swann had 11 points. Kristopher Wilson dished out five assists.

Dakota State struggled from the 3-point line. The Trojans shot 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) compared to the Tigers' 10-for-21 (47.6 percent).

The Tigers shot 51.1 percent (24-for-47) from the field compared to DSU's 40 percent (26-for-65). DWU went the free-throw line 26 times and made 20 free throws. DSU was 8-for-16 at the free-throw line.

DWU outrebounded the Trojans 36-28.

Dakota State plays NCAA Division I South Dakota State in an exhibition game on Monday night. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
