Trojans lose to Mayville State 21-14 in DAC Football action

MAYVILLE, N.D. - The Dakota State University football team faced Mayville State in the battle for the first DAC conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Comets held a 14-7 halftime lead and defeated DSU 21-14 at the Jerome Berg Field.
Dakota State remained winless in nine games and 0-7 in the DAC conference. Mayville State snapped their six-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 2-7 and 1-6 in the conference.
Mayville State scored the first points of the game in the first quarter. Dominique Bradley rushed for a 45-yard touchdown to give the Comets' 6-0 lead. Tyler Yamanouchi's PAT kick was good to make it 7-0 Comets. Mayville State used five plays for 67 yards in two minutes and 38 seconds.
DSU's Mike Trimble scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. Dennis Lechner added the PAT kick to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:57 remaining in the first half. The Trojans' scoring drive included 13 plays for 80 yards in 5:06.
Tanner Carpenter threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tony Evenstad as the Comets regain their lead to 13-7. Yamanouchi's PAT kick was good as the Comets take a 14-7 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, DSU's Paul Bagala connected to Stacey Berg for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Lechner's PAT kick was good as the Trojans tied the game at 14-14.
Bradley scored his second rushing touchdown in the early fourth quarter for the Comets. He scored on a 9-yard run. Yamanouchi's PAT kick was good to put the Comets up 21-14. Mayville State used six plays for 63 yards in 3:15.
The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunity in the closing minutes as turned on downs on Comets' 36-yard line.
Bagala was 21-for-39 with 257 yards for DSU. He recorded a touchdown and two interceptions. Darrik Bunker rushed 13 times for 38 yards. Kyle McIntire had six receptions for 62 yards. Carl Curtis added five catches for 77 yards.
For Mayville State, Bradley rushed 26 times for 181 yards and recorded two touchdowns. Carpenter was 10-for-23 with 202 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Solan had three receptions for 92 yards. Victor Redd added three catches for 82 yards.
Eric Liles led the Trojans with nine tackles. Joe Whealy added eight tackles. The Trojans recorded nine tackles-for-loss of 30 yards.
Billy Drake had nine tackles, including 3 tackles-for-loss of 24 yards for the Comets. He recorded two quarterback sacks. Justin Popovich added two sacks. Dominique Bradley and Ben Rayfield each had seven tackles. Josh Jefferies recorded an interception. The Comets had six tackles-for-loss of 47 yards.
Mayville State outrushed the Trojans 210-27. The Comets had 412 total yards compared to the Trojans' 284.
Dakota State will play their final regular season game at the Fargodome on Nov. 7. The Trojans will play Valley City State in the Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl at 9 a.m. The other Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl games are Mayville State vs. Jamestown at 12:30 p.m., Minot State vs. SD School of Mines at 4 p.m. and Black Hills State vs. Dickinson State at 7:30 p.m.
