DSU wins season opener against in-state rival DWU in women’s basketball

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball team hosted their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Tuesday night. The Trojans defeated the Tigers 78-73 in both teams' season opener at DSU Fieldhouse.
DSU opened with a 12-2 run in the first seven minutes of the game. The Trojans extended to their largest lead of the game at 23-12 with 7:52 remaining in the first-half.
Dakota Wesleyan used a 17-6 run to tie the game at 29-29 with 56 seconds left in the first-half. The Trojans went on to lead 32-31 at halftime.
There were seven ties in the first nine minutes of the second-half. At 49-49, The Trojans went on a 13-4 scoring tear to lead at 62-53 with 7:47 left in regulation.
DWU scored nine straight points to rallied and tie the game at 62-62 with 5:27 left in the game. With both teams tied at 66-66 with 3:07 left in the game, the Trojans went on a 5-0 run to lead at 71-66 with 1:50 left in regulation.
Dakota State secured the victory in closing seconds as the Trojans went 9-for-12 at the free-throw line, including 5-for-6 by DSU's Katie Bourk, in the final two minutes of the game.
Bourk led the Trojans with 16 points. She went 3-for-8 from the field and 9-for-12 at the free-throw line. Kylie Westover scored 14 points. She shot 4-for-8 from the 3-point line. April Mielke added 13 points, including 6-for-9 at the free-throw line. Courntey Hamblin had nine points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Five players scored in double digits for DWU. Kenzie Dvoracek had 17 points. She shot 7-for-12 from the field and 3-for-6 from the 3-point line. Micaela Erickson scored 12 points. Elizabeth Lamb had 11 points. Brittany Hills and Taylor Piper each had 10 points. Piper dished out four assists. Brittany Pritchard grabbed 13 rebounds.
Dakota Wesleyan won the rebounding battle over the Trojans 45-38. The Tigers committed 22 turnovers compared to DSU's 16.
DSU was 21-for-32 at the free-throw line (65.6 percent) compared to DWU's 8-for-14 (57.1 percent).
The Trojans shot 24-for-58 from the field (41.4 percent). DWU shot 28-for-65 from the field (43.1 percent).
Dakota State looks to make it two straight wins as they host Dordt (Iowa) of the GPAC on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Tip-off is slated at 6 p.m. as part of women's/men's doubleheader with the Defenders at DSU Fieldhouse.
