DSU Football loses final DAC conference game to Valley City State

Box Score vs. Valley City State - Defensive Stats
FARGO, N.D. – The Dakota State University football team played in their last Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) game against Valley City State in the second annual Dacotah Bank DAC Bowl Sunday morning. The Vikings defeated DSU 62-39 in the highest scoring game in a DAC Bowl game at Fargodome.
Dakota State ended their regular season with an overall record of 0-10 and winless in eight DAC conference games. Valley City State finished their regular season with a 4-6 overall record and 3-5 in the DAC.
The Trojans opened with a touchdown by Stacey Berg's kick-off return for 84 yards. Dennis Lechner's PAT kick was good to put DSU up 7-0.
Valley City State answered back with a touchdown. Derek Elliot rushed for a 3-yard touchdown. The PAT kick by Dillon Davis was good to tie the game at 7-7. Elliot rushed a key play for 67 yards in this scoring drive. VCSU used three plays for 74 yards in 58 seconds
VCSU took the lead with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter. Trent Kosel ran an option play for 46-yard touchdown. Davis' PAT kick was good to extend the Vikings' lead to 14-7. VCSU used three plays for 68 yards in 1:16 in the scoring drive.
Lechner kicked a 32-yard field goal as the Trojans cut the Vikings' lead to 14-10 with nine seconds left in the first quarter. DSU used 11 plays for 41 yards in the scoring drive.
The Vikings outscored the Trojans 27-0 in the second quarter to take a 41-10 halftime lead.
DSU forced a fumble from VCSU Kosel in the early third quarter. Paul Bagala connected to Berg for a 40-yard touchdown for the Trojans. Lechner's PAT kick was good as the Trojan cut the deficit to 41-17.
Valley City State added another score in the third quarter. Kosel threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to LeTheo Proctor. The PAT kick by Davis was good to put VCSU up 48-17.
DSU's Bagala threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Carl Curtis with 5:23 left in the third quarter. Lechner added a successful PAT kick as the Trojans trimmed the Vikings' lead to 48-24. DSU used five plays for 47 yards in 1:55 in the scoring drive.
The Trojans recovered their onside kick after their scoring drive and went on for another score in the early fourth quarter. Joe Whealy rushed for a 1-yard touchdown on a 4th-and-goal situation for DSU. The Trojans converted the 2-point conversion as Bagala connected to Kyle McIntire as DSU cut the deficit to 48-32.
VCSU used 10 plays for 59 yards in 5:32 for their next score. Kosel threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nick Schoenecker with 9:25 remaining in the game. The PAT kick by Davis was good as the Vikings extended their lead to 55-32.
The Vikings added another score in the fourth quarter. Jordan Backstrom threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Proctor. Davis added the PAT kick as the Vikings' lead grew to 62-32.
Bagala threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Mike Trimble for DSU with 2:24 left in the game. The PAT kick by Lechner was good as DSU trimmed VCSU's lead to 62-39. The Trojans used eight plays for 80 yards in 2:17.
Bagala was 15-for-33 with 198 yards and recorded three touchdowns for the Trojans. He had an interception. Berg had five receptions for 100 yards and recorded a touchdown. Curtis added six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Darrik Bunker rushed 13 times for 34 yards. Trimble added five rushes for 30 yards.
Valley City State had three rushers for over 100 yards. Elliot rushed 16 times for 131 yards and recorded a touchdown. Andy Derilus had 21 rushes for 122 yards with two touchdowns. Kosel ran 16 times for 107 yards. He was 13-for-18 with 225 yards and threw four touchdown passes in the game. Proctor recorded five catches for 132 yards and recorded two touchdowns.
Eric Liles led the Trojans' defense with 17 tackles and recorded an interception. Drew Allen added 12 tackles. Joe Whealy had 10 tackles. Blake Schlagel had a quarterback sack and forced a fumble. Bryce Logan added a quarterback sack.
Garrett Jackson had eight tackles for the Vikings. Kevin Strang added seven tackles. Cody Kilthau recorded an interception and returned for 17 yards.
VCSU outrushed the Trojans 395-105. The Vikings had 658 total yards in the game compared to the Trojans' 303.
Valley City State had the ball for 43 minutes and eight seconds in the game. The Trojans had the possession of the ball for 16 minutes and 52 seconds.
