Trojans defeat Dordt in men’s basketball season home opener

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team played their first home game Tuesday night at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans hosted Dordt (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). DSU used a strong run late in the first-half and early in the second-half to pull away over the Defenders 89-72.
Dakota State raised their overall record to 3-2. The Trojans are currently 2-2 against the teams of the GPAC. The Defenders dropped their overall record to 1-3, all against members of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC).
Dordt and Dakota State tied the game six times in the first 14 plus minutes of the first-half. At 28-28 with 5:45 left before intermission, the Trojans went on a 14-3 run in a span of three minutes to grab a 42-31 lead.
DSU's Santino Clay made a jump shot just before halftime as the Trojans led at 44-37.
The Trojans sparked a 17-7 run to start the second-half to lead at 61-44 with 15:16 left. DSU continued to expand to their largest lead of the game at 85-60 with 3:56 left in the game.
Dakota State outscored the Defenders 45-35 in the second-half.
Six players scored in double digits for the Trojans. Clay scored 20 points on his 8-for-12 shooting night. He recorded two blocked shots. Jordan King added 18 points and dished out five assists. He went 4-for-7 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Spencer Adams had 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded six steals. Jesse Bean scored 13 points off the bench. Mike Larsen had 11 points and recorded five assists. Brad Martin had 10 points.
For Dordt, Trevor Wolterstorff had 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Austin Katje and bench player Kyle Lindbergh each scored 11 points. Jordan Vogel had 10 points and recorded eight rebounds.
The Defenders committed 27 turnovers in the game compared to the Trojans' 13. DSU outscored Dordt 31-11 in points off turnovers.
Both teams shot 47.5 percent from the field. The Trojans shot 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from the 3-point line compared to the Defenders' 5-for-21 (23.8 percent). DSU was 21-for-25 at the free-throw line compared to the Defenders' 11-for-17.
Dordt outrebounded the Trojans 41-29.
Dakota State will continue their three-game home stand this weekend. The Trojans will be hosting their in-state rivals' in the annual Ed Harter Classic. DSU will host No. 20 Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Trojans welcome No. 8 University of Sioux Falls at 4 p.m. Both games will be rematches of earlier season contests with the games being held at the DSU Fieldhouse.
