Ed Harter Classic set for Friday and Sunday

November 11, 2010

Dakota State will host the Ed Harter Classic on Friday and Sunday.  The Trojans will play two in-state rivals from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in the classic.  On Friday, DSU hosts Dakota Wesleyan at 7 p.m.  On Sunday, the University of Sioux Falls faces the Trojans at 4 p.m.  All games will be at the DSU Fieldhouse.

The classic is to honor DSU's long-time coach Ed Harter.  Maurice 'Ed' Harter arrived to DSU in 1962 and coached at the institution for 28 years.  During his tenure, he accumulated over 200 wins as the DSU Head Basketball Coach, including the school's first SDIC basketball championoship in 1967.  That team finished the season with a 20-6 record.  Although best known as the Head Basketball Coach, Ed also coached baseball, golf and football as well as served as athletic trainer and instructor of physical education during his time at Dakota State.  He was inducted into the SDIC Hall of Fame in 1991 and the DSU Hall of Fame in 1995.

USF's overall record is 1-1.  The Cougars lost to No. 3 Bellevue (Neb.) and defeated DSU in overtime.  University of Sioux Falls is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll.

On Nov. 6, USF rallied from 20-point deficit to defeat DSU in overtime 83-75 in the USF/Famous Dave's-Subway Classic.  The Trojans raced to a 48-28 halftime lead.  USF rallied in the second-half and forced overtime.  The Cougars outscored the Trojans 11-3 in overtime.
