DSU upsets No. 8 University of Sioux Falls in Ed Harter Classic

Mike Larsen - Photo by Donald WeilderMADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University Trojan men's basketball team hosted the University of Sioux Falls of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in the second game of the Ed Harter Classic Sunday afternoon. The Trojans raced to a 19-point halftime lead and defeated the Cougars 76-56 at the DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State, which bounced back from a tough home overtime loss to No. 20 Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night, raised their overall record to 4-3. The Trojans are 3-3 versus the GPAC this season (defeated Morningside, Dordt and USF). USF, No. 8 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Division II Preseason Poll, dropped to 1-2. The Cougars defeated the Trojans 83-75 in overtime in their first meeting on Nov. 6 as part of USF/Famous Dave's-Subway Classic.

DSU's Mike Larsen nailed down a long 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer as the Trojans extended their lead to 43-24.

Dakota State shot 48.4 percent from the field in the first-half (15-for-31) compared to the Cougars' 28.6 percent (8-for-28).

The Trojans continued to keep their lead between 13 and 20 points in the second-half. DSU's lead grew to the largest margin of the game at 72-48 with 4:15 left in the game and secured the victory.

Larsen and Spencer Adams each scored 15 points for the Trojans. Adams grabbed six rebounds. Bryce Snyder added 11 points. Santino Clay had nine points. Jordan King scored eight points and dished out four assists. King and Jordan Snyder each had three steals.

For USF, David Maxwell and Skyler Bloch each had 10 points. Matt Malloy added nine points and grabbed six rebounds.

Dakota State shot 46.3 percent from the field (25-for-54) compared to the Cougars' 39.2 percent (20-for-51). The Trojans were 22-for-30 (73.3 percent) at the free-throw line. USF made 13 free-throws in 16 attempts (81.3 percent).

USF committed 22 turnovers compared to the Trojans' 15. DSU outscored the Cougars 28-8 in points off turnovers.

DSU outrebounded the Cougars 34-32.

Dakota State will head on the road Friday night. The Trojans will face Trinity Bible College in a non-conference game in Ellendale, N.D. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
