DSU upsets NCAA Division II Augustana in men's basketball thriller

Mike LarsenSIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University men's basketball team played an exhibition game with NCAA Division II Augustana (S.D.) of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Friday night.  The Trojans held a one-point halftime lead and went on to upset the Vikings 52-51 at the Elmen Center.

Dakota State's overall record remains at 5-3.  Augustana suffered their first loss of the season and dropped their overall record to 3-1.  The loss snapped Vikings' 12-game winning streak against the Trojans.

Spencer AdamsIn the first 20 minutes of the game, there were seven lead changes and three ties.  The largest lead of the first-half was a four-point lead by the Vikings with eight minutes and seven seconds left before intermission (21-17).

The Trojans used a 10-3 run to overtake the lead at 27-24 with 3:16 left on the clock in the first-half.

Dakota State held Augustana to no field goals in a span of more than six minutes in the late first-half.  A jumper by AC's Cody Schilling with seven seconds left before halftime trimmed DSU's lead to 29-28.

The Trojans opened the second-half with a 9-2 scoring run for DSU's largest lead of the game at 38-30 with 14:27 left in the game.  AC missed their first 11 shots to start the second-half.Jordan King

With 12:14 left in regulation, Augustana nailed down their first field goal of the second-half by Cameron McCaffery's 3-pointer to cut their deficit to 38-34.

The Vikings scored 12 unanswered points to regain their lead at 42-38 with 9:21 left in the game.

DSU ended their scoring drought in a span of more than six minutes with Mike Larsen's lay-up.  The Trojans cut their deficit to 42-40 with 8:09 left.

Dakota State tied the game for the fourth time at 44-44 by Jordan King's lay-up and Spencer Adams' tip-in with less than six minutes remaining.

Schilling scored five straight points as Augustana broke up a 44-44 tie into a 49-44 lead with 4:33 left in the game.

DSU tied the game at 49-49 with 3:48 left on the clock by Adams' 3-pointer and a lay-up by Larsen.

Schilling stole the ball and made a lay-up to give Augustana 51-49 lead with two minutes remaining in regulation.

DSU answered back by Adams' 3-pointer for a 52-51 lead with 1:24 left.

The Trojans missed their opportunity to extend their lead with 32 seconds left as King missed a 1-and-1 bonus free-throw situation.

The Vikings missed two shots in the last 24.7 seconds of the game.  DSU's King stole the ball with two seconds remaining as the Trojans secured an exhibition win.

Larsen and Adams each scored 13 points for DSU.  Santino Clay added nine points.  Jordan King had seven points and dished out six assists.

Four DSU players had five rebounds (Jordan Snyder, Clay, Adams and Bryce Snyder).

King, Larsen, Bryce Snyder and Jordan Snyder each recorded three steals.

For Augustana, Schilling scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  He was 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-7 at the free-throw line.  McCaffery added 17 points.

Dakota State shot 20-for-46 from the field (43.5 percent) compared to the Vikings' 18-for-57 (31.6 percent).  The Trojans struggled at the free-throw line, going 5-for-14.  AC was 9-for-16 at the free-throw line.

Augustana outrebounded the Trojans 40-29.  The Vikings suffered 16 turnovers compared to the Trojans' 14.

Dakota State returns back to regular season action on Sunday afternoon.  The Trojans will face NCAA Division II Wayne State of NSIC.  Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb.
