Trojan men's basketball opens DAC conference with win on road

Jordan KingMAYVILLE, N.D. - The Trojan men's basketball team opened their final year of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) season on the road Friday night.  Dakota State faced their DAC's traveling partner Mayville State in both teams' lone conference game this month.  The Trojans shot 54.6 percent from the field in the game to defeat the Comets 77-68.

DSU, receiving votes to the latest NAIA Men's Basketball Division II national poll, raised their overall record to 6-4 and 1-0 in the DAC.  Mayville State dropped their overall record to 4-4 and 0-1 in the conference.Santino Clay

Dakota State started the game with eight straight points - first four points by Jordan King - in the first three minutes.  The Trojans held the Comets to three points in the first eight minutes and nine seconds of the first-half to give DSU a 10-2 lead.

Mayville State came back within 16-15 with 8:28 left before intermission.  DSU used a 14-4 run in a span of more than five minutes to extend their lead to 30-19 with less than four minutes before halftime.

The Comets closed the first-half with a 10-5 run to trim DSU's lead to 35-29.

The Trojans shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the field compared to the Comets' 35.7 percent (10-for-28) in the first-half.

DSU kept their lead within four and nine points in the first eight minutes of the second-half.  With DSU leading 48-43 with less than 12 minutes left in the game, the Trojans went on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 57-45 with 9:38 left in regulation.

Mayville State answered back with a 13-4 run to cut the Trojans' lead to 61-58 with 3:43 remaining in the game.  The Trojans used a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 68-60 with 2:06 left in the game.  DSU prevented the Comets' comeback in the final minute as the Trojans secured the victory.

King scored 23 points and dished out seven assists for the Trojans.  He shot 8-for-12 from the field, including 3-for-5 from the 3-point line.  Santino Clay added 19 points.  Spencer Adams had 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.  Mike Larsen scored eight points and recorded five rebounds.  Brad Martin scored seven points off the bench.  Jordan Snyder had six points and grabbed six rebounds.

For Mayville State, Shavonate Samuels had 21 points.  He was 10-for-18 from the field.  Christian Harris had 12 points.  Sean Greene added 11 points.  Ross Aman recorded 10 boards.  Dalonte Gibson recorded eight points and dished out five assists.

DSU shot 30-for-55 from the field compared to the Comets' 27-for-66 (40.9 percent).

The Trojans were 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) from the free-throw line.  Mayville State was 6-for-7 (85.7 percent).

Mayville State outrebounded the Trojans 32-27.  The Comets had 10 offensive rebounds compared to DSU two.

Dakota State will return back to their non-conference schedule on Thursday night.  The Trojans will begin their brief two-game home stand against NCAA Division III Presentation College.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m., or 25 minutes after the completion of the women's game, at DSU Fieldhouse.
