DSU women's hoopsters drop DAC season opener

April MielkeMAYVILLE, N.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team traveled to Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to face Mayville State in both teams' Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) season opener Friday night.  The Comets used a strong first-half closing run and survived Trojans' late second-half rally, 77-67.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 3-5 and 0-1 in the DAC conference.  Mayville State recorded their second straight win after losing their first five games of the season (1-0 in DAC).  It was both teams' lone DAC conference game this month (DAC conference action will return back on Jan. 7, 2011).Julie Munson

Mayville State scored five straight points in the opening minute of the game.  With the Comets leading 7-6 with 16 minutes and four seconds left in the first-half, Yui Onodera made a 3-pointer to give DSU their first lead of the game at 9-7 with 13:13 on the clock.

The Trojans led 21-18 with 7:15 left before intermission.  The Comets closed the first-half with a 20-3 scoring tear for a 38-24 halftime lead.

DSU went 8-for-29 from the field, with all the points from the 3-point line (8-for-27) in the first-half.

April Mielke made the first 2-point field goal of the game for DSU with 19:13 left in the game as DSU cut the deficit to 40-26.

Julie Munson nailed down a 3-pointer with 1:30 left in regulation as the Trojans cut their deficit to 67-61, but DSU could not get any closer.  The Comets went 10-for-14 from the free-throw line in the final 1:30 to secure the victory.

Mielke scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Dakota State.  She went 8-for-14 from the field.  Munson added 12 points.  Kylie Westover and Katie Bourk each had nine points.  LaTasha Dowell and Onodera each dished out three assists.

Four players scored in double figures for the Comets.  Hailey Longtin had 18 points on her 5-for-10 shooting from the field, including 5-for-9 from the 3-point line.  Laura Taylor added 18 points.  She was 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.  Taylor grabbed nine rebounds.  Eli Cosme-Gonzalez and Erin Erickson each had 12 points.  Cosme-Gonzalez dished out eight assists.  Kira DeMorales had eight points and recorded 11 boards.

Mayville State shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-for-54) compared to the Trojans' 24-for-64 (37.5 percent).

There were 70 3-point field goal attempts combined by both teams.  DSU went 13-for-47 (27.6 percent).  The Comets shot 8-for-23 (34.8 percent).

The Trojans committed 26 fouls in the game compared to the Comets' 16.  Mayville State was 21-for-31 (67.7 percent) from the free-throw line compared to the Trojans' 6-for-12 (50 percent).

Mayville State won the rebounding battle 36-31.

Dakota State will return back to non-conference schedule with a four-game home stand, starting on Monday night.  The Trojans host Mount Marty of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
