DSU's second-half rally falls short to BC in women’s basketball action

The Trojans hosted Briar Cliff of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Saturday night. Briar Cliff never trailed in the game as the Chargers survived DSU's second-half rally, 74-59.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 4-7. The Chargers, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national poll, improved their record to 8-7.

Dakota State missed its first seven shots to open the game to allow Briar Cliff to score the first six points. The Trojans cut the deficit to 10-8 with 12:48 left before intermission.

With BC leading 16-10 with less than eight minutes remaining in the first-half, the Chargers went on a 17-5 run to extend their lead to 33-15 with 39 seconds left. Briar Cliff grabbed a 35-18 halftime lead.

DSU struggled from the field in the first-half. The Trojans shot 7-for-26 (26.9 percent) from the field and 1-for-14 from the 3-point arc. The Chargers shot 15-for-32 (46.9 percent) from the field.

Briar Cliff extended to their largest lead of the game at 53-29 with 13:04 left in regulation.

The Trojans went on a 26-8 scoring tear in a span of more than nine minutes. DSU trimmed their deficit to 61-53 with 4:49 left in the game.

BC secured the victory as the Chargers closed the game with a 13-6 run.

Aneshia Starks and Katie Bourk each scored 12 points for the Trojans. Kylie Westover and April Mielke each added nine points. Starks grabbed nine rebounds. Mielke recorded eight rebounds. Hamblin added seven boards.

For Briar Cliff, Megan Salcedo shot 9-for-11 from the field for 18 points. Kylie Dilla added 12 points. Michelle Determan scored nine points and dished out seven assists. Kela Cihak scored eight points off the bench. Dilla, Salcedo and Christa Stewart each recorded five rebounds.

Briar Cliff shot 43.8 percent overall (28-for-64) from the field. DSU was 20-for-64 from the field (31.3 percent). The Chargers was 14-for-19 from the free-throw line compared to the Trojans' 12-for-20 (60 percent).

Dakota State recorded over 50 rebounds for their third straight game. The Trojans recorded 51 rebounds (27 offensive) compared to Chargers' 38.

The Trojans suffered 27 turnovers compared to BC 17.

Briar Cliff outscored DSU 42-18 in the paint.

Dakota State will hit the road on Monday night. The Trojans will visit NCAA Division I North Dakota State in an exhibition game. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.
