Trojan men’s basketball team wins third straight game

PioneerMADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team hosted Morningside College in both teams' second meeting of the season Saturday night. The Trojans raced to a 20-point lead late in the second-half and survived the Mustangs' late rally 77-70 at the DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State, receiving votes to the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll, raised their overall record to 8-4. The Trojans won their fifth game in the last six games. Morningside dropped their overall record to 5-8.

The Trojans defeated Morningside 75-57 on Nov. 5 as part of University of Sioux Falls/Famous Dave's-Subway Classic. In the first 14 minutes of the game, there were five ties and four lead changes.

With the game tied at 19, the Trojans went on a 10-4 run in the final 5:58 of the first-half to grab a 29-23 halftime lead.

Dakota State expanded their lead to 51-37 with 11:47 left in regulation. The Trojans extended it to their largest lead of the game at 72-52 with less than four minutes remaining.

Morningside went on a 14-0 scoring tear to trim their deficit to 72-66 with 51 seconds left in the game. Dakota State secured the victory by converting 5-for-8 free-throws.

All five starters scored in double digits for the Trojans. Spencer Adams scored 25 points (23 points in the second half). He shot 8-for-13 from the field, including 2-for-4 from the 3-point line. PioneerMike Larsen had 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded dished out four assists. Bryce Snyder and Santino Clay each scored 10 points.

Tyler Johnson had 12 points for Morningside. He went 4-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from the 3-point arc. Bryan Borchers added 10 points. Kevin Zoz had eight points. Joel Haveman recorded six points and dished out four assists off the bench. Borchers, Johnson and Trent Miller each grabbed five rebounds.

Dakota State shot 50.9 percent from the field (27-for-53) compared to the Mustangs' 45.1 percent (23-for-51).

Both teams struggled at the free-throw line as DSU went 17-for-26 (65.4 percent). Morningside was 16-for-26 (61.5 percent).

DSU won the rebounding battle by a slim margin 34-32. The Trojans outscored Morningside 38-22 in the paint. The Mustangs' bench scored 27 points compared to the Trojans' six.

Dakota State will have a week off before returning back to action in the final week of 2010. The Trojans will compete in the Morningside Holiday Classic. DSU will face No. 6 Briar Cliff at 3 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa.
