DSU men's basketball team looks to extend winning streak this week

The Dakota State University men's basketball team looks to extend their winning streak as they compete their final two games of 2010 in the Morningside Holiday Classic. The Trojans will face No. 6 Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Dakota State takes on the host team Morningside on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. All games will be held at the RVSC-Allen Gym in Sioux City, Iowa.
DSU is 8-4 overall record. The Trojans received recognition to the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Poll. Dakota State won their third straight game after defeating Morningside 77-70 on Dec. 18 in Madison, S.D. DSU has won five games in the last six games.
Briar Cliff is 13-1 overall. The Chargers are tied for No. 6 ranking with Black Hills State in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Poll. After losing to Hastings 87-73 on Dec. 11, the Chargers won two straight games in the Cruzin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Briar Cliff defeated Warner Southern 80-55 and Northwestern Ohio 76-45.
The last time Dakota State and Briar Cliff met was exactly two years ago on Dec. 29, 2008 as part of the Morningside Holiday Classic. The Chargers held a nine-point lead at halftime (43-34) and outscored the Trojans 56-38 in the second-half for a 99-72 victory.
Morningside is 7-8. The Mustangs won two straight games after dropping a 77-70 defeat to Dakota State. Morningside defeated Ottawa 84-62 and Roanoke 89-49 in the Las Vegas Hoopla on Dec. 20-21.
Dakota State and Morningside will meet for their third and final time on Thursday night. The Trojans had won the first two meetings. DSU defeated Morningside 75-57 in the USF/Famous Dave's-Subway Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Nov. 5. On Dec. 18, the Trojans built a 20-point lead in the late second-half and survived Mustangs' late 14-0 spurt to win the second meeting 77-70 in Madison, S.D.
Dakota State will return back to Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) on the weekend of Jan. 7-8, 2011 in North Dakota.
