Trojan women's basketball team plays final game of 2010, first game of '11

The Dakota State University women's basketball team will play their final game of 2010 on Friday, Dec. 31 at the DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans welcome York (Neb.) in a make-up game from Dec. 11.  Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. for both teams' second meeting this season.

The Trojans will play their first game of 2011 on Monday, Jan. 3.  DSU travels to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. to take on their in-state rival, Dakota Wesleyan.  The non-conference game will tip-off at 7 p.m.  It will be the second meeting for both teams this season.

Dakota State is 4-7 overall record.  The Trojans suffered a 74-59 home defeat to Briar Cliff on Dec. 18.  DSU is 1-2 on their current four-game home stand.

York, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, is 3-10.  The Panthers were off since Dec. 8 after dropping their fifth straight game (York lost to Midland 82-70). 

Dakota State won the first meeting from York on Nov. 27 in York, Neb.  The Trojans held a 31-25 halftime lead.  DSU outscored the Panthers 23-19 in the game's final 20 minutes for a 54-44 non-conference victory at the Freeman Center.  Both teams struggled from the field as the Trojans shot 35.2 percent compared to Panthers' 32.2 percent.

Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) member Dakota Wesleyan is 3-10.  The Tigers defeated Midland 82-80 on Dec. 12 in Mitchell, S.D.  DWU competes in the Warner University Tournament in Lake Wales, Fla.  The Tigers face Warner University on Dec. 28 and Brewton Paker College on Dec. 30.

DSU is currently 1-5 against teams in the GPAC. 

The Trojans recorded a 78-73 victory over DWU on Nov. 2 in Madison, S.D. in both teams' last meeting.  DSU led 32-31 at halftime.  At 49-49, the Trojans went on a 13-4 scoring tear to lead at 62-53 with 7:47 left in regulation.  DWU rallied back to tie the game at 62-62.  The Trojans used a 5-0 run to lead at 71-66 with less than two minutes remaining in the game.  DSU converted 9-of-12 free-throws in the final two minutes of the game to secure the win.  The Trojans were 21-for-32 (65.6 percent) from the free-throw line compared to DWU 8-for-14 (57.1 percent).
