Trojan women’s basketball team loses first game of 2011

LaTasha DowellMITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball team returned back to action for the first time since Dec. 18.  The Trojans faced their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference game at the Corn Palace Monday night.  The Tigers defeated DSU 70-52 in both teams' second meeting of the season.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 4-8. DWU improved to 5-11. The Trojans won the first meeting 78-73 in Madison on Nov. 2.

The Tigers led 14-13 with eleven minutes and 19 seconds left in the first-half. Aneshia StarksDWU limited the Trojans to six points in the final 10:41 of the first-half as DWU grabbed a 32-19 halftime lead.

Dakota Wesleyan scored seven straight points to open the second-half to extend to their largest lead of the game at 39-19 with 17:54 left in the game.

DSU used a 16-6 scoring run to cut the deficit to 45-35 with 12:25 left in regulation. The Trojans were unable to come closer as DWU secured the victory.

Yui OnoderaLaTasha Dowell, Aneshia Starks and Yui Onodera each scored 11 points for Dakota State. Julie Munson added seven points. Starks had five rebounds and three steals.

For DWU, Kim Johnson scored 18 points off the bench. She shot 8-for-10 from the field. Brittany Pritchard had a double-double of 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Micaela Erickson had 11 points and seven rebounds. Elizabeth Lamb dished out seven assists.

The Tigers shot 45.8 percent (27-for-59) from the field compared to the Trojans’ 28.1 percent (18-for-64). DSU was 7-for-35 (20 percent) from the 3-point arc, while DWU was 3-for-18 (16.7 percent).

DSU struggled at the free-throw line, shooting 9-for-20 (45 percent) compared to the Tigers’ 13-for-18 (72.2 percent).

Dakota Wesleyan was plus-22 in rebounding margin (53-31). The Tigers committed 24 turnovers in the game. DSU turned the ball 16 times.

Dakota State returns back to DAC conference action this weekend. The Trojans travel to No. 13 Minot State on Friday night. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the MSU Dome. On Saturday, DSU will visit Dickinson State for a 5 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (MT) match-up.
