Blue Hawks’ second-half surge defeats Trojans in women’s basketball

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Trojan women's basketball team traveled to the Scott Gymnasium for a DAC conference game with Dickinson State Saturday afternoon. Dakota State grabbed a nine-point lead at halftime, but the Blue Hawks' second-half surge defeated the Trojans 64-54.
Dakota State fell to 4-10 overall record and 0-3 in the DAC. Dickinson State raised their overall record to 9-6 and 2-2 in the conference.
After Dickinson State made two free-throws to open the game, the Trojans reeled off 12 straight points to grab a 12-2 lead.
Katie Bourk nailed down a 3-pointer as Dakota State extended to their largest lead of the game at 35-21 with less than three minutes remaining.
The Blue Hawks scored the final five points of the first-half as the Trojans held a 35-26 halftime lead.
Dakota State shot 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from the field in the first-half compared to the Blue Hawks' 27.3 percent (9-for-33).
Dickinson State used a 20-4 spurt in the first nine minutes plus of the second-half to regain the lead at 46-39. Two straight 3-pointers by Trojan Kylie Westover trimmed the Blue Hawks' lead to 46-45 with less than nine minutes left in regulation.
With Dickinson State leading at 55-54 with less than two minutes left in the game, the Blue Hawks outscored the Trojans 9-0 to secure the victory.
The Blue Hawks converted 13-of-22 free-throws in the second-half.
Kylie Westover had 15 points off the bench for Dakota State. She was 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-7 from the 3-point arc. Bourk and Jacobsen each had eight points. Jacobsen grabbed six rebounds. Aneshia Starks dished out four assists.
For Dickinson State, Kylee Bittner had 21 points and eight rebounds. She shot 8-for-21 from the field and 6-for-11 from the free-throw line. Bittner dished out three assists and recorded five steals. Amber Adams added 11 points. Mandy Mullock scored 10 points.
Dakota State shot 41.3 percent overall (19-for-46) from the field compared to the Blue Hawks' 33.3 percent (20-for-60).
Dickinson State was 18-for-30 (60 percent) from the free-throw line while the Trojans were 8-for-13 (61.5 percent).
Dakota State outrebounded the Blue Hawks 43-36.
The Trojans suffered 35 turnovers in the game compared to the Blue Hawks' 17.
Dakota State will return home for a brief three-game home stand, starting next weekend. The Trojans look to end their four-game losing streak as they host South Dakota School of Mines in DSU's conference season home opener on Friday night. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
