DSU men’s basketball completes season sweep with Comets

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team continued their Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) action on Wednesday night. The Trojans hosted their DAC's traveling partner Mayville State at the DSU Fieldhouse. DSU built an 18-point lead in the second-half and held on with the late Comets' rally to complete a season sweep, 73-64.
Dakota State won their second straight game and improved one game above .500 (11-10 overall). The Trojans raised their conference record to 3-5. Mayville State dropped to 7-13 and 2-6 in the DAC.
There were five ties and two lead changes in the first-half. The Trojans grabbed the biggest lead of the first-half at 32-26 with one minute and 41 seconds left. DSU held a 32-28 halftime lead.
Mayville State closed the gap to 32-30 in the opening minute of the second-half. DSU scored 10 straight points to extend their lead to 42-30 with 15:31 left in regulation.
The Trojans expanded to their largest lead of the game at 59-41 with less than 10 minutes to go. The Comets put together a 20-6 scoring run to trim their lead to 65-61 with 3:09 left in the game.
DSU secured the victory with an 8-3 closing run.
Four players scored in double digits for Dakota State. Jesse Bean scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. He went 5-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-6 from the 3-point arc and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Mike Larsen added 14 points and dished out a season-high eight assists. He had four steals. Jordan King scored 12 points off the bench and dished out three assists. Spencer Adams added 10 points. Santino Clay recorded six rebounds.
For Mayville State, Shavontae Samuels had a double-double of 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was 9-for-25 from the field. Samuels recorded five assists. Ross Aman added 16 points and recorded nine rebounds. Bryen Pyles had 14 points.
Dakota State shot better in the game, shooting 49.1 percent (28-for-58) compared to the Comets’ 38.7 percent (24-for-62). Both teams made seven 3-pointers.
Mayville State won the rebounding battle 41-30. The Comets outscored the Trojans 16-2 in second chance points.
The Trojans scored 15 fast-break points in the victory. DSU had 18 points off the bench compared to Mayville State 5.
Mayville State suffered 22 turnovers in the game compared to the Trojans’ 13.
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak on Saturday night. The Trojans travel to the Cimpl Arena to face Mount Marty of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Yankton, S.D.
