Trojan women’s hoopsters struggle in home loss to Mayville State

Cassie Jacobsen - Photo by Scott VoigtMADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball started their second-half of the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) schedule Wednesday night. The Trojans hosted their DAC's traveling partner Mayville State at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans struggled from the field as they lost to Mayville State 80-75.

Dakota State suffered their fourth straight loss and dropped to 5-14 overall and 1-7 in the DAC. Mayville State snapped their eight-game losing streak and lifted their record to 3-13 and 2-6 in the conference.

In the opening minutes of the game, the Comets and Trojans traded leads. With the third tie of the game at 12-12 with eleven minutes and six seconds left, Hailey Longtin scored seven of the next nine points as the Comets grab a 21-12 lead.

Mayville State held their lead between six- and nine-points for the rest of the first-half. The Comets grabbed a 34-26 halftime lead.

The Comets shot 38.7 percent (12-for-31) from the field in the first-half. Dakota State went 9-for-34 from the field (26.5 percent), which the Trojans made six 3-point field goals (made three 2-point shots).

In the first 5:36 of the second-half, Mayville State used a 13-6 scoring tear to grab the biggest lead of the game at 47-32.

Kylie Westover - Photo by Scott VoigtDSU used their rally to trim their deficit to 66-62 with 3:12 left in regulation. The Comets scored 10 straight points in a span of two minutes to extend their lead to 76-62.

The Trojans mounted a 13-4 scoring run in the final 1:21, but fell short.

Cassie Jacobsen led all scorers for Dakota State. She scored all of her 21 points in the second-half. Jacobsen went 8-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-6 at the free-throw line. Kylie Westover made six 3-pointers for 18 points. Yui Onodera added nine points off the bench. LaTasha Dowell and Katie Bourk each had seven rebounds.

Laura Taylor recorded a double-double off the bench for the Comets. She scored 24 points and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds (11 offensive). Taylor was 12-for-16 from the free-throw line. Longtin added 21 points. Angela Tauer scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kay Laforet had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Mayville State shot 41.9 percent (26-for-62) overall from the field compared to the Trojans’ 34.6 percent (27-for-78). DSU went 13-for-32 (40.6 percent) from the 3-point arc, while the Comets were 6-for-21 (28.6 percent).

The Comets converted 22-of-35 free-throws (62.9 percent) in the game. DSU made 8-of-11 free-throws.

Mayville State outrebounded the Trojans 59-38. The Comets had 21 offensive rebounds. The Trojans were outscored 20-4 in second-chance points.

The Comets scored 36 points inside the paint compared to the Trojans’ 22.

DSU outscored the Comets 25-12 in points off turnovers. Mayville State suffered 23 turnovers in the game compared to DSU 13.

Dakota State will try to snap their four-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on AIB College of Business in both teams’ first ever meeting. The non-conference game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
