DSU men's basketball looks to extend winning streak Friday & Saturday

January 31, 2011

The Dakota State University men's basketball team returns home this weekend for a couple of Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) games.  The Trojans will attempt to extend their winning streak at the DSU Fieldhouse.  DSU hosts Dickinson State on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) and Minot State on Saturday night (6 p.m.).

Dakota State is 12-10 overall record and 3-5 in the DAC conference.  The Trojans are currently on a three-game winning streak after defeating Mayville State (73-64) on Jan. 26 and Mount Marty (69-59) on Jan. 29.

Dickinson State is 13-10 and 6-3 in the conference.  The Blue Hawks defeated Valley City State (78-64) on Jan. 26, but lost to Jamestown (70-68) on Jan. 30 in Dickinson, N.D.

Minot State is 10-13 overall and 4-5 in the DAC.  The Beavers lost to Jamestown (74-71) on Jan. 26 and defeated Valley City State 65-52 on Jan. 30.

After a low scoring affair in the first-half, Dickinson State went on a fast start in the second-half to defeat Dakota State 56-47 in both teams' first meeting at the Scott Gymnasium in Dickinson, N.D.  There were five ties and eight lead changes in the first-half.  The Blue Hawks grabbed a 21-17 halftime lead.  Dickinson State started the second-half with a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 33-19 with less than 16 minutes left in the game.  Dakota State shot 19.2 percent from the field in the first-half compared to the Blue Hawks' 35.3 percent.

Dakota State struggled in the first meeting with Minot State (66-51) on Jan. 7 at the MSU Dome in Minot, N.D.  The game was knotted at 17-17 with 6:25 left in the first-half.  The Trojans were unable to score in a span of more than five minutes as the Beavers reeled off 13 straight points for a 30-17 lead.  Minot State went on a 15-6 run to extend their lead to 49-28 in the early second-half.  The Trojans trimmed their deficit to 51-35 with 10:47 lefth in the game, but could not get any closer.

It will be Dakota State's last regular DAC conference games with Dickinson State and Minot State before making transitions next year.  The Trojans will be making a move to NAIA Independent.  Dickinson State will remain as a four-member of the Dakota Athletic Conference with Valley City State, Jamestown and Mayville State.  Minot State had been accepted to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as they make their move to NCAA Division II next season.

The games will be available on live video webcast from 'America One.'  In addition, there will be a live stats/scoring from the game.  Check on www.dsuathletics.com for more information under 'Upcoming Events.'

Radio coverage will also be available on KJAM FM 103.1 with the Trojan voice of Brian Holt.
