DSU women’s basketball snaps six-game losing streak with ‘W’ over Beavers

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University women's basketball team played their last Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) meeting with Minot State on Saturday afternoon at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans raced to a 12-point lead and held on to defeat the Beavers 72-67.
Dakota State snapped their six-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 6-16 and 2-8 in the DAC conference. Minot State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national poll, dropped to 15-7 and 6-5 in the conference.
Dakota State shot 8-for-10 from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the 3-point arc, to give the Trojans 21-9 lead with less than twelve minutes in the first-half. The Beavers were 2-for-15 from the field during that span.
With the Trojans leading 32-20 with 4:34 left before halftime, the Beavers used an 8-2 closing run to cut DSU's lead to 34-28 at halftime.
Minot State opened the second-half with a 10-4 run to tie the game at 38-38 with 15:22 left in regulation. Both teams traded leads for most of the second-half.
At 63-63 with 4:11 left in the game, the Beavers scored four straight points to grab a 67-63 lead.
DSU's Julie Munson nailed down a 3-pointer as the Trojans regained their lead at 68-67 with 1:30 left (Trojans scored five straight points). LaTasha Dowell added a free throw to make it 69-67 DSU with 1:06 left in the game.
The Trojans secured the victory as DSU scored the final three points from free throws.
Munson scored 14 points off the bench for the Trojans. She was 4-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-8 from the 3-point line. April Mielke added 11 points. Kylie Westover scored 10 points. Aneshia Starks had eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Cassie Jacobsen added eight points. Jacobsen, Mielke and Starks each had two blocks.
Four players scored in double digits for Minot State. Katie Hardy and Lauren Safranski each had 15 points. Sacarra Molina had 14 points. Caroline Folven scored 13 points. Christina Boag grabbed eight rebounds. Molina dished out four assists.
Dakota State shot better in the game, shooting 40.7 percent from the field (24-for-49) compared to the Beavers' 35.6 percent (26-for-73). The Trojans had 11 3-pointers in the game, while Minot State had three.
Minot State outrebounded the Trojans 48-40. The Beavers had 19 offensive rebounds in the game.
DSU's bench outscored the Beavers 37-9. Minot State scored 38 points in the paint compared to the Trojans' 20.
It was the last DAC regular season meeting for both teams before making transitions next year. Dakota State will become an independent team with the NAIA. Minot State had been accepted to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13, while they make their move to NCAA Division II next season.
DSU will make their final regular season road trip next weekend. The Trojans will travel to Spearfish, S.D. to face nationally-ranked Black Hills State on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)/5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium.
