Yellow Jackets snap DSU’s five-game winning streak in men’s basketball

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team faced a nationally-ranked team for the seventh time this season. The Trojans faced the DAC's leader Black Hills State at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium. DSU opened the game with a fast start, but the Yellow Jackets used a strong surge down the stretch to defeat the Trojans 78-64.
The loss ended DSU's five-game winning streak. The Trojans fell to 14-11 overall and 5-6 in the DAC conference. Black Hills State, No. 7 in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll, won their third straight game and raised their record to 20-5 and 9-2 in the conference.
Dakota State raced to a 14-2 lead in the first three minutes and thirty seconds of the game.
With DSU leading 23-18, the Yellow Jackets scored 16 straight points for a 34-23 lead. DSU Jesse Bean's lay-up ended the scoring drought for the Trojans with 1:52 left before halftime.
BHSU closed the first-half with a 35-9 run to grab a 15-point lead at halftime (42-27).
The Trojans used a 13-4 scoring tear to open the second-half to cut their deficit at 46-40 with 14:59 left in regulation, but could not get any closer. BHSU extended to their biggest lead of the game at 76-55 with 3:25 left.
Both teams scored 37 points in the second-half.
Santino Clay scored 16 points for Dakota State. He was 5-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the 3-point arc. Clay grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. Mike Larsen added 11 points. Spencer Adams and Bean each scored eight points.
For Black Hills State, Will John Johnson had a double-double of 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Tanner Adler scored 19 points off the bench. He was 8-for-12 from the field. Rob Johnson added 12 points. Spencer Childress and Clay Pottorff each had four assists.
BHSU shout 45.5 percent from the field (30-for-66) compared to DSU 39.6 percent (21-for-53). The Trojans had 12 3-pointers made in the game, while the Yellow Jackets recorded eight.
Black Hills State won the rebounding battle over the Trojans 42-33. A total of 16 turnovers were committed in the game – nine by DSU and seven for the Yellow Jackets.
The Trojans were outscored 39-16 in bench points.
Dakota State looks to rebound back in the winning column on Saturday night. The Trojans will face the DAC's second-place team South Dakota School of Mines in a conference game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT)/6 p.m. (MT) at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D. SD Mines won the first meeting from DSU 68-54 in Madison, S.D. on Jan. 14.
