Trojan men’s basketball secures first winning season since 1993

Box Score vs. Valley City State
MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University men's basketball team hosted Valley City State in a Dakota Athletic Conference game at the DSU Fieldhouse Friday night. The Trojans built a comfortable lead at halftime and survived the Vikings' late rally to secure their first winning season since 1993, 62-52.
Dakota State notched their 15th win for the first time since 2004 (the year Dakota State finished second in the DAC and finished 15-15 overall). The Trojans improved their overall record to 15-12 and DAC conference record to 6-7. Valley City State dropped their record to 8-19 and 2-11 in the conference.
DSU started the game with a 7-1 scoring run with sixteen minutes and 58 seconds left in the first-half.
With the Trojans leading 11-8 with 13:23 left before halftime, Dakota State went on a 12-5 scoring tear to grab a 23-13 lead with 7:21 before halftime.
DSU's Brad Martin nailed down a 3-pointer before halftime to give the Trojans 34-22 halftime lead.
The Trojans expanded to the largest lead of the game at 53-35 with 8:27 left in regulation.
Valley City State mounted a furious rally with a 17-5 run to pull within six-point (58-52) with 52 seconds left. Mike Larsen and Jordan King each made two free-throws to secure the victory.
Bean scored 14 points for Dakota State. He was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Larsen added 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Spencer Adams had nine points and pulled down seven rebounds. Bryce Snyder had eight points and nine rebounds. King dished out five assists.
Aaron Duske had 16 points for the Vikings. Mark Klingberg added 13 points. Tyler Macomber recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mike York dished out six assists. Calvin Kraft scored eight points.
Dakota State shot 36.4 percent from the field (20-for-55), but struggled from the field in the second-half (25 percent). Valley City State was 31 percent from the field (18-for-58) in the game. The Vikings shot 25.9 percent in the first-half.
The Trojans were 18-for-25 from the free-throw line compared to VCSU 11-for-16.
Dakota State will conclude their regular season on Saturday night. The Trojans will host Jamestown in DSU's final DAC conference game. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. or 25 minutes after the completion of the women's game. Seniors will be recognized after the women's game is completed and prior to the men's warm-ups.
