DSU Baseball suffers opening season losses to Doane

EMPORIA, Kan. - The Dakota State University baseball team opened their first four games with Doane College on Saturday and Sunday. The four-game series were originally scheduled to play in Crete, Neb., but was moved to Glennen Field at Emporia State University. The field was consisted of all turf. The Tigers swept the Trojans in four games.
Dakota State fell to 0-4 overall record. Doane raised the record to 9-4.
The Trojans will face Park (Mo.) in a doubleheader Monday, starting at noon. It was originally schedule for Tuesday. The doubleheader was moved to Monday to avoid the potential storm that will hit the Midwest on Tuesday.
Game One (Saturday) - Doane 18, Trojans 2 (5 innings) - Box Score
The Tigers opened the first inning with four runs for a 4-0 lead. Doane exploded for 10 runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 14-0.
Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a run scored each in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. The game was ended due to 10-run mercy rule.
Seth Doxey went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Trojans. Chaz Palmer added a single and an RBI. Jamie Barbour had a single. Ryan Steffensen had a run and a walk. Derek Bohlander recorded two walks.
For the Tigers, Anthony Hincy went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Anthony Dunn added three RBIs. Austin Tharp had a home run and recorded four RBIs. Ethan Schroeder had two singles and three RBIs.
Ted Wonnenberg suffered the loss for DSU. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed 13 runs (3 earned) on nine hits. Dylan Jones tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief. He gave up four runs (1 earned) on eight hits. Marshall Doeden closed the game for one inning. He allowed one run on one hit.
Chance Brull remained undefeated in three games for Doane. He pitched four innings and limited the Trojans to one run on three hits. Zach Klene pitched one inning of relief. He allowed one run on one hit.
The Trojans committed seven errors in the game. Doane outhit DSU 18-4.
Game Two (Saturday) - Doane 15, Trojans 1 (5 innings) - Box Score
The Tigers produced two runs each in the first three innings to grab a 6-0 lead. Palmer hit an RBI single to score Connor Hargrove in the bottom of the third inning as the Trojans cut the Tigers' lead to 6-1.
Doane scored nine runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 15-1.
Dakota State recorded four hits in the game. Palmer, Chance Hargrove, Connor Hargrove and Andy Lee each had a single.
Tharp went perfect behind the plate for the Tigers. He went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and recorded two RBIs. Tharp had two walks. Jason West had three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Schroeder added a double and two RBIs.
Tom Bailey took the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs (5 unearned) on eight hits. He struck out three batters. Bohlander pitched in relief and gave up six runs (1 unearned) on three hits. Jake Weier closed the game in 2/3 shutout innings.
Britton Scheele notched his second win of the season for Doane. He tossed a complete game and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out four batters.
Game Three (Sunday) - Doane 12, Trojans - (5 innings) - Box Score
Doane scored all 12 runs in the second inning in Tigers' victory over the Trojans.
Chance Hargrove, Zac Woods, Barbour and Connor Hargrove each had a single for DSU.
Mike Albert went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Tigers. Anthony Dunn, Tharp and Michael Korsakas each had two singles.
Barbour suffered the loss for Dakota State. He tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed 11 runs (2 unearned) on 10 hits. Beau Behrent pitched 2 2/3 innings and in relief. He gave up one unearned run on two hits.
Nick Dawson pitched a complete game for his first pitching victory this season for the Tigers. He struck out 11 batters.
Game Four (Sunday) - Doane 8, Trojans 6 - Box Score
The Trojans fell short in the series finale as the Tigers outscored DSU 4-0 in the final three innings of the game.
Dakota State opened the game with a 3-0 lead. Doane scored once in the bottom first frame to trim DSU's lead to 3-1.
Each team scored twice in the second inning as the Trojans held on to a 5-3 lead.
With DSU leading 6-4 before entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers scored three runs to overtake the lead at 7-6. Doane added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the victory.
Doxey went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Dakota State. Chance Hargrove had a single and recorded three RBIs. Max Garza had a single and an RBI. Connor Hargrove added an RBI. Steffensen recorded a single, two runs and two walks. Palmer and Bohlander each had two walks.
Cody Foreman, Steffensen and Doxey each had a stolen base.
For Doane, Albert had a 3-run home run. AJ Spanel and West each had two hits. Dunn and Tharp each hit a double. Hincy recorded a single and two RBIs.
Doxey started the game for DSU. He pitched four innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Brandon Womack suffered the loss as he tossed two innings. He gave up two runs on three hits.
Rolando Celis opened the game for the Tigers. He pitched one inning and gave up three runs on two hits. Brian Polfer pitched two innings in relief as he gave up two runs on two hits. Tim Carlson added one inning of relief. He gave up one run on one hit. Nathan Roth recorded his first pitching win as he shut down the Trojans in the final three innings. He struck out four batters.
