Pirates sweep Trojans in baseball

PARKSVILLE, Mo. - The Dakota State University baseball team continued their 11-game stretch in one-week on Monday afternoon. The Trojans visited Park (Mo.) in a doubleheader at the Comfort Field. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday and was pushed back due to a potential inclement weather. The Pirates defeated the Trojans 6-1 and 15-1.
Dakota State remained winless in six games. Park raised their overall record to 6-1.
After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With the base loaded and one-out situation for Park, Ricky Alfonso hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Kyle Clifton.
Dakota State answered back with one run scored in the top of the third frame to tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Steffensen recorded an RBI single to score Beau Behrend.
Mike Elliott hit a 3-RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Pirates a 4-1 lead.
Park added two runs in the fifth inning to secure the win.
Steffensen went 2-for-3 behind the plate for DSU. He swiped a base. Max Garza added a double. Behrend recorded a stolen base.
For Park, Elliott was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and three RBIs. Wesley Moody and Trevor Hodgins each added two singles.
The Pirates left 10 runners on base compared to the Trojans' 3.
Chaz Palmer (0-1) took the loss for Dakota State. He pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on two hits. Brandon Womack tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up four runs (two unearned) on five hits. Womack struck out three batters.
Derek McGowan recorded his second victory for Park. He went six innings and allowed one run on three hits. McGowan recorded seven strikeouts. Derek Gordon tossed one shutout inning and struck out two batters in relief.
The Pirates scored a combined 12 runs in the first three innings.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Braun opened with a double to left field. Marshall Doeden hit an RBI double to score Braun to cut the Trojans' deficit to 12-1.
Park added three runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. The game was ended in the fifth inning due to mercy-run rule.
Braun and Doeden each had a double for the Trojans. Andy Lee added a single.
Ryan Rush went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and recorded three RBIs for the Pirates. Cody Cobb and Jimmy Smelcer each went 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Elliott had three RBIs.
Steffensen (0-1) took the loss for Dakota State. He tossed 1 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits. Dylan Jones pitched one inning in relief and allowed five runs on three hits. Doeden closed the game with 1 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up three runs on four hits.
Gab Perez pitched four innings for his second victory of the season for the Pirates. He allowed one run on three hits. Perez struck out five batters. Josh Mall tossed one shutout inning in relief.
Dakota State will continue their stretch on the road on Wednesday. The Trojans looks to record their first win of the season as they visit William Jewell (Mo.) in a nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the Polly Grant Memorial Field in Liberty, Mo.
